Reciever experience needed-700/howa/savage

1'st choice rem 700 lots of aftermarket stuff 2'nd savage then the howa not because they are't a good action but because of the limited parts available and the metric thread is a crapshoot for many gunsmiths

and the metric thread is a crapshoot for many gunsmiths

get a better gunsmith :d
I am having my fourth or fifth rebarrelled, it isnt hard. As for parts it can be true, finding certain styles, or brands of stocks can be tough, but there is plenty out there. Lack of aftermarket triggers is an issue, but the new Howa triggers seem better than some aftermarket ones. Lots of rails, mounts etc as well. Spare parts, yeah, thats an issue, unless like I did after giving up on the Canadian suppliers, you just go to ones in the States, in which case, easy peasy. I put that as less a Howa problem, than a Canadian business support problem. (BTW, only part I ever had fail on a howa was the bolt stop screw, and that was all down to me).

Dosing I think the problem is lots of gunsmiths with older lathes can't cut metric threads , I've done lots myself but hate doing them because I have to change gears on the feed, they are a nice action and have a nice extractor as well as a integral lug but hate the metric thread

Re. the Savage extraction/ejection issue. I've got a Savage 10T-SR from Cabela's, it's never had any issue extracting or ejecting but it wasn't really a strong ejection - called Savage and they sent me a little parts kit. Includes a new ejector and extractor as well as ejector spring and retaining pin, and a new spring and bearing for the extractor.

According to the internet the original Savage extractor bearing is a 0.125" / 3.175mm / 1/8" ball, and the "upgraded" unit is a 0.140" / 3.556mm / 9/64" ball. If you just want a new bearing MEC or any bike repair shop will sell loose bearings - and MEC definitely has 1/8" bearings. Seems a lot more difficult to get 9/64" bearings though - and very few places will carry ~3.5mm bearings (one industrial supply place out here was willing to order them in, but only in quantities of 100+).

I have the same rifle, how much of a difference did the upgraded Savage parts make in your rifle?

Prior to the upgrade extraction and ejection were, at worst, weak-ish - sort of an occasional casing that would just clear the receiver. After the upgraded parts were installed, the first test was with unfired cartridges and these were difficult to get the bullet clear of the chamber because the ejector wants to toss them as soon as there's any sideways movement in the case. It's not as though this makes your rifle into an SKS with cases going ballistic, but it does improve things.

Maybe a more Mauser like controlled feed system would be a better design, or one in which the extractor has more purchase and can grab the case as the round comes out of the magazine.

Apparently, this just got released in the US - 783 with AICS DBM. This is the Varmint version and in 6.5 Creedmoor

If you are choosing a factory donor for a mag fed build, function and feeding would be my top priorities. Having a ton of aftermarket is nice... having a rifle that runs like a custom, to me, is better

... the parts will come.

PS.. I have no more info.. maybe Gravel can shed some light????
