I'm gearing up to reload 2.5" .410 ammo, with 1/2oz. of #8's. Is anyone using the Challenger (i.e. Cheddite) hulls for reloading? Any favourite recipes to share? I want to make sure I get the right powder/wad combo for a nice finish crimp.

I never reloaded .410 shells. Go to Ballistic Products "Small Bore Manual" 10th Edition - page 92 - about a dozen loads listed with 2 1/2" Chedditte hull, Cheddite 209 and Fio616 primers, Fed 410SC and Rem SP410 wads; 1/2 ounce lead shot. Both H-110 powder and Lil Gun powder. Minimum pressure loading shown is 8,700 psi. Highest pressure loading shown is 12,300 psi. I think SAAMI sets max pressure for 2 1/2" .410 at 12,500 psi - which is what your shotgun should have been made to be strong enough to hold - if that is what it was originally chambered for.

I have data but only for BPI wads naturally. The .410 is problematic to get good crimps especially with Cheditte hulls. I got PO'd and used a roll crimper.

I use cheddite 209 primers red claybuster wads and 410 powder. It called for a mec bushing 10 I believe but I was only getting around 1000fps so I think I'm using a #12 bushing iirc. It's over book but I'm getting right around 1200fps. I get 6 to 8 loads from each hull. 1/2oz of 9s for skeet. 1/2oz copper plated 6s for small game

Thanks guys. I'm up and running with about 16.7gr. H110 in a Win HS hull, Cheddite primer and Claybuster 5050 wads. Velocity right around 1275fps. I found the MEC powder bushings were not dropping what the chart said, and ended up needing to use the #13. The #12A I got was surprisingly light at 15.5, about the same as the #12. I did a 50rd. of 5-stand this morning and the 1100 my reloads just fine. I even broke a couple of clays.

It was never worth my time to load 2.5 inch shells for .410. I went 3 inch or nothing. You can still use a light load with 3 inch hulls with a bit of cardboard packing or crushed corn media but I find it ineffective unless you are shooting your barn pigeons from inside the barn.

I use the 3 inch red winchester hulls. I used to buy them loaded then circulate into my hull supply to freshen it up but now my hunting buddies save them for me and drop them off once a year for an additional 50 or 100 fresh hulls to the inventory. I get 10 - 15 loads before they get tossed.

Forget the bushings forever. Use the Universal Charge bar and throw away the bushings.

I believe the universal charge bar is no longer made. I have a new one in the wrap and a used one too galled to work from hardened lead shot and crappy zinc construction. PITA is calibrate.

That's too bad, because as soon as I saw they would throw small enough charges for .410 I was going to get one. Great idea, but sounds like someone needs to make a good quality version.
