recipe for 45/70

you don't say what bullet you will be using or powder, but for a very heavy load, i work up to 55grs. of h-335 and the Chambers 480gr.WFN GC cast hard. For a lighter kicking load I use a 420gr. WFN GC cast hard and 46grs. of RL-7 or 49grs.of AA2015. These loads are well above factory loads as far as power goes and you should be aware that recoil is very stout with load 1. Load #1 is going well above 1800fps and the lighter ones, close to 1700fps. Pls. be warned that I accept no liability with any use of these loads!

You have to work up the load for your rifle. No two rifles will shoot the same ammo the same way.
Pick your bullet and powder and work up a load from your manual.

You've probably already discovered that data for the .45-70 can be a bit confusing because of the 3 load levels required for different strength actions. For the GG, listed as a "modern high strength" action but NOT Ruger #1 or Mauser bolt strength, there are still a lot of differences in data recommended as safe. For powders, IMR3031 seems to be very good, H4198 and H4895 are right in there as well. Using 56.8 grs 3031 pushing a Hornady 350 gr RN is giving me about 2150-2190 fps and is just a hair over the Hodgdon data starting point. They list a compressed load of somewhere around 61 grs as a max, but this is the load worked up to. It's powerful and the kick is there. I don't think I want to try more, though I'm pretty sure you could simply fill up the case and not be too concerned (DON'T TRY IT!). Compressed charges don't necessarily mean more recoil or more velocity, in this case probably no more than increased muzzle fire. At 3600+ ft/lbs (24" bbl) what more does one need? Check out realguns.com and read a very neat workup process for loading for the GGun in .45-70. Joe knows what he`s doing and wrote a 4 piece writeup on doing exactly what you`re looking for.
