Looking at the composite pieces of the VZ-58, the material is intriguing to say the least. A chipboard/resin mixture of some kind? An early variant of Oriented Strand Board? It's certainly strong and durable.

Which begs the question: has anyone tried to replicate this stuff with modern materials. Say, for example, by mixing colored epoxy and wood chips.

Making pieces out of a mixture like that would mean making a mould of some kind, but I suspect Plaster of Paris would take a cast of the parts OK.

Just curious if anyone has worked with this at all.

Fibers...

Many natural fibers can be used in composite materials: coconut fiber, sisal, wood chips and many more.
You could also use a very strong and commonly available fiber for mixing with epoxy: human hair.
I'm pretty sure that given access to a good quantity of long and short human hair, one could make very nice and strong moldings of just about anything that can be done today with fiberglass and resin.
Asian hair are top quality. Could there be a market?...;)

i see no reason to make another stock out of presto log .:D

i prefer to adapt existing wood stocks such as AK or dragunov stocks or buy metal side folder and under (AK) folder or buy plastic thumhole . FAB folder is nice but too rich for my blood, lol.

Cutton, where did you get that nice cheekrest for the VZ-58 skeleton folding stock? It looks good!
PP.:)

homemade from my lawnmover side chute , i never used the chute so i cut it up and heated it and folded around the metal side folder , very comfy and adjustable forward and backward , the best part is it the cheek rest folds over the top cover (see bottom pic) .

i have these pic posted elsewhere but i will post it here again.

Hey, what a great idea. Carve a stock out of Presto Log. ROTFL!

I haven't tried adapting any, but I do want to make an extended wood stock that is similar in line and appearance to the standard furniture. I hadn't really given much thought to making wooden fore-end furniture, although I suppose it could be done with a decent woodworking shop.

I think the FAB front end, or the new aluminum one that Palinak is supposed to be getting, will be the way I'll end up going for the front of the -58. For the 858 I think I'll keep the Presto Log.

wood... now you are talkin , not only its more attractive but also easy to work with , esp for the cz858 stock bcos of its design is generally flat , which happens to be the same width as the plank you buy from fine wood store ( 1.25 " X 5.5 " ).

i wouldnt bother making the front HG , just use the standard wood one but do refinish so to match the stock.

Yep, I think that's the answer. Same lines as the presto-log stock, but stretched overall. Some nice, fairly pretty wood should not be too hard to find.

For preliminary work, something like Cedar would be ideal to experiment with - laminate two fence boards together after routing out the channel for the stock bolt on the inside. Get the shape just right and then use it as a template.

Once all the bugs are worked out, go to something nice. What's a nice hardwood that grows in Czecho?

P.S. one of my coffee buddies suggested a slab of aluminum cut to shape, corners rounded, polished, and then lightening holes drilled (like 1" - 1 1/2") and then black-anodize. I notice that he didn't offer to pay for it....LOL

start with wood first and then aluminum .

if you dont have access to a planner then i would use an easier way to attach the wood stock , i did mine using a "U" bracket but you are required to use a nut from a metal folder, this is the way i attach AK stock .
i will post a pic later .

your idea is interest but it would leave a line .

i got another idea , how about reusing the stock retaining screw , grind the head down , screw it in and then slide a new stock that is drilled the same diameter as the retaining screw , finally screw from the bottom into the retaining screw, this way no gluing .
