Winchester 170 grain Silver tips.

I have the bullets, and other stuff, but I need to know what type and amount of IMR powder to use.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. :)

30-30 Loading

The factory load for 170 gr slugs is easily duplicted by using 32.8 gr. of Winchester 760. Winchester (Olin) almost always uses their own powders for their own cartridges. If you want to use IMR powder - 31.0 gr. of IMR4895 works very well and in a couple of my rifles that load produces better than average accuracy.
Carry on!

"...need to know what type and amount..." If you don't have a manual, you need one. Load for the bullet weight. The type or who made the bullet doesn't matter.
Factory ammo uses powders reloaders can't get.

I've had great success with 37.0gr of BL-C(2) pushing a 150gr Sierra Flat Nose (#2000 Pro Hunter Power Jacket) using a light crimp and a WLR primer.

BL-C(2) meters very well (accurately and smoothly) - it's ball powder.

This is data I used from a Hodgdon's manual - it's the upper limit for this powder/bullet combination. My gun really likes this load.

Check a reloading manual and work-up carefully.

Good luck - SD

Where did you get 170 Silvertips? Did you luck out by getting some old stock or something? I didn't think they were available to reloaders.

Last year at a local Gunshow of all places, the guy had a big pile of 30/30 stuff, and I bought it all for a song.

One of those rare finds for sure.

In most of my 30 caliber rifles I have also had great luck with IMR 3031, even my Garand loves it. I have an older 30-30 that loves 30.2 grn of 3031 and for a lever action most people have a hard time excepting it can do 1.25" at 100 yards with open sites. Most of the problems with the accuracy of the 30-30 is not the ammo but the rifle itself, once it is setup correctly it will shoot great.
