Hey guys, was looking over one of my old rifles that had been rebarrelled at some point in it's life and came across a proof marking that I do not recognize. Wondering if someone has seen similar and could maybe identify it. It's on a 60's browning safari grade fn action with the magnum short extractor.

Thanks for Looking, Joel

That's a provisional Birmingham proof mark for a rifle "not of English make".

The provisional proof was done prior to the barrel being fitted to the action. A plug was screwed to the breech end, and the proof charge fired remotely.

The encircled BV means a gun not of English make; for British built guns the BV would not be circled. A BP was definitive proof with the barrel fitted to the action. You may find "Not English Make" stamped somewhere on the barrel

I guess I should have taken some more angle shots. It looked like it was stamped PV. I'll have to look again this after noon and maybe snap a couple more photos.

thanks, Joel

no other marks except a 7mm REM. The barrel seems to have a slight purplish tinge to it in certain light. I'll take a bore scope to it later and see in there are any marks around in the chamber area.

Found it. Belgian proof marking for "smokeless powder proof for rifles"

Thanks. The british proof marks got me looking at different countries and surprise surprise, it was of Belgian origin even if it was a replacement barrel.
