Recoil hurts my cheek- what am I doing wrong?

Switched from my fabarm to an 870 recently. The fit seems better as I look straight down the bead as soon as I mount the thing. However I am smacking myself on the cheek with the hard wood stock upon recoil vs the synthetic of the fabarm- never had a problem really. Anyone have any tips for this, am I holding it girly like?

Sure it's the wood and not your thumb that is smacking you? Check if the LOP is same between the two guns (especially if it's your thumb).

What was the action of the Fabarm? If it was a semi perhaps there was less recoil than with the pump?

Maybe take a break from shooting and then come back to it. Could be that you mounted teh gun poorly one time and bruised your cheek bone, so now you just "feel" it more (or shoot the Fabarm again to find out!).

I find that if I shoulder the gun against the actual shoulder/arm joint I get a sore cheek. If I shoulder it against my chest or shoulder pocket I don't get a sore cheek.

Cheek slap can happen when the angle of the butt plate drives the stock slightly upwards on recoil, vs straight back or even slightly downwards. Start by comparing the butt plate angle between the fabarm and the 870.

Get tighter on the gun, including your cheek. You should move as one unit when it goes off. Any slop will result in what you describe.

This ^^. Your Fabarm probably had slightly different stock dimensions from the 870, particularly pitch and drop at heel. The 870 is able to rotate more, with your shoulder as the pivot point.

A well practiced shooting style does not transfer well from stock to stock sometimes. With the standard Remington stock on the 870 I never get smacked in the face. With the Speedfeed pistol grip stock I do. I am sure this would stop if I shortened it an inch. This is probably one of the reasons they came up with the Monte Carlo type stock but that is an assumption on my part.

I have found while i was shooting a friends sutomised stock shotgun i tended to hold it higher on my shoulder to line the sights up, so the bottom of the buttpad was against my shoulder and some of the top of the buttpad was actually above and not against anything. I found shooting like this tended to make the gun pivot up more than just push straight back, which wacked me in the cheek alot more, might need to shim the rear part of the stock lower on your shoulder.
