If you're going to load it to factory specs.,then a slim cut to flatten the butt may be in order so as to mount a Pachmayr pad on 'er. For my own 9.3x57 Husqvarna, I'm leaving the stock plate on 'er as the length of pull suits me well. For bench shooting sessions, I use a Past recoil shield to soak up the boot.
If you're using the rifle as an "uber plinker" fun gun with reduced loads with cast boolits, then no need to alter the stock for a pad.
For hunting, you want the length of pull to be right for your structure and must consider things like the amount of clothing worn while hunting. Every layer of clothing has a direct effect on length of pull & set-up for the shot. Most hunters don't notice the recoil during the shot with medium bore rifles.
It's all up to your preference after playing with the beasty, and play with it a bunch to get the full value from 'er.
