Hey Guys,
I bought by 1st bolt action Rifle, a Remington 700 SS 5R Milspec. Having never really fired a .308 before I'm quickly realizing my shoulder needs your advice. I"'l be shooting prone mostly.

Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If I remember correctly that is an HS stock with a glued on pad. You will need to cut it off and square the buttstock. Then find the right limbsaver pad (grind to fit most likely) by using the templates on their website.

I went through the same process with my Sendero .300 win mag. With a .308, I would just suck it up. Unless you have a shoulder injury or are holding the rifle improperly, you will get used to the recoil.

Recoil pad for a .308, are you serious. Just practice with the rifle unless you have had a past shoulder injury.
I am not a big guy at all and when i was 14 my father thought i was ready to use his 30-06 180 grain bullets, when i complained about the recoil he gave me the best advice ever.
I was told suck it up princess! now recoil has never bothered me since.

I have previously seperated that shoulder, and more recently, tore a rotator cuff in the same shoulder, both from hockey. Call me a cream puff if you must. Both injuries have healed, maybe I'm not doing something right.

Hey, if your shoulder was injured. I rescind my suck it up remarks. The Limbsaver has served me well. I only removed the rubber from my old pad and left the plastic piece on the stock. This was a much easier, more solid way to do it I felt and only increased the LOP 1/4". After prepping the old plastic I epoxied the Limbsaver on and attached it with the supplied screws as well. I was just going to leave it the way it was without grinding it. It didn't look too bad and I thought the more surface area the better anyway.

As i stated if due to injury understandable, not meaning anything derogatory just stating what was told to me. Thought people might be amused by it.

No offense taken, I lol'ed. I did however call a friend of mine, former military sniper and current competetive police marksman, to see if I was actually being a panty waist... he said the 5R has particularly heavy recoil. He suggested a muzzle brake.

Yeah i guess depending on the style of rifle, then again i am used to recoil. Last year i sighted in a new 270 win savage 114 with one arm off the bench, the other arm had just been crushed and had a external fixater on it.

my wife and i find the 5r recoil to be very manageable. stock butt pad. Neither of us are large people. Its a fairly heavy gun, at least mine is with the NF on it. Seems to kill some of the kick.

You may want to consider a Limbsaver shoulder Pad...under $100 at Brownells and you can where it under a jacket if you are concerned that some cyber -macho man will make fun of you :)

We build a lot of guns and make a ton of stocks. I have never had a customer complain that I gave him/her too soft a pad. I always try to ask what calibre it will be and fit what I think best. If you like getting beat up then fit a steel plate and enjoy it!

hahaha, too true!

I have a r700 5R also(love it), and while I can't say it's more or less than any other .308, atleast logic tells me its the same.. I've got a beat up shoulder(high school wrestling), and in my peronsal experience, it is simply giving me 0 room for error at all in my hold. I've shot 30 rds just fine, and then had 2 where I didn't quite have it set right, and that threw it for the rest of the day with a pretty bruise.... Just my 2 cents, but I'd try as much as you can, doing short sessions, to find what your new shoulder(post-injury) will work best with, and go from there. If you can't find a comfortable hold, then look into the limb saver. I personally think a muzzle break for a .308 'might' be overkill, but hey... just my 2c, and every shoulder is different.

much better to have someone at the range laugh at you wearing shoulder protection, and then you can laugh at their piss-poor groups when the targets come back.

I notice all the posts talk about getting a recoil pad installed on the gun. Have you ever thought about a P.A.S.T. recoil pad. Wearable. About $40

Years ago I went to intro Days and ORA with my new 300 win mag Browning A-bolt. I shot 20 rounds prone that day and was black and blue. I entered a fun competition the next weekend where the course of fire was 60 rounds various positions. I figured I would develop a horrible flinch. I got a P.A.S.T pad and had no issue. Not even a red mark.

It fits under a t shirt or over a jacket. Something to think about.

Thanks, I just ordered the PAST recoil pad. The added benefit is I don't have to take a saw the the HS stock and can sell it if I upgrade.

Prone position shooting will beat you up more than any other position. When standing or sitting, your shoulder can move backwards far more than when you are prone.
