What is the opinion of mercury recoil reducers, both the type that fit in the stock and the type that you put in the used barrel of an O/U. Do these work ? or are they just hype ?
Thanks

I have one in the stock of my skeet gun. IMHO, it does a better job helping with balance than recoil reduction. I didn't notice a significant reduction in recoil by adding it.

If recoil is actually a serious issue, I think there are better ways (although pretty expensive) to address it.

Brad.

I've found they help a little ... tried a CH Research magazine cap type recoil reducer on a Beretta 391, together with one in the buttstock - on a lady friends gun as she was initially complaining about recoil when she first started shooting. The two units kept the gun "in balance" with added weight in two places, and from her perspective, seemed to diminish the felt recoil ... perhaps by both adding a few ounces to the gun and by further spreading the recoil sensation out over a slightly longer interval.

Yes, I think they work ... & they are relatively expensive.

Good gun fit, technique, coaching & consistant mounting with appropriate target loads are a better way to approach things IMHO.

Same lady no longer uses the recoil reducers, and has not mentioned recoil
over the past couple of years now.

I tried the mercury model and didn't like the extra weight and the slouching of the liquid but i did use the one with the coil spring in my Model 12 trap gun and found it to work quite well they have to be installed correctly to be effective .

recoil reducers

Is it recoil to your shoulder you wish to reduce, or recoil to your cheek?
I recently installed a coil spring type in my stock and noticed a difference.
But Nothing compares to the results you can acheive with a soft comb if it is cheek slap you are suffering.

I've tried them, but was not impressed. The weight seems to stop some of the bounce, but actual recoil was negligible. Your best bet is a good trap gun that fits and stay away from the three dram loads. There is also significant recoil reduction in 1 ounce shells.

I also put a magazine cap type recoil reducer on my Beretta A303 Trap. I don't think it reduced the recoil any significant amount but the additional weight out front made the gun feel more balanced in my hands.
