I am curious to find out what type of semi-auto shotgun action is considered the best. Recoil operation like the Browning A5 or Gas Operated? What would be the best for Migratory & Upland bird hunting? Does one have an advantage over the other? I assume gas operated actions would be prone to fouling over time. What about ease of maintenance?

Gas operated actions require generally more cleaning and are somewhat less reliable in the hands of someone who does not maintain them. But they generally can handle a broader range of shells, from light skeet to heavy waterfowl. Inertia driven actions like benelli and its clones tend to be more reliable and idiot proof, but tend to shoot a particular type of shell better than others. Generally they are tuned to handle heavier magnum loads, so they won't like the 1 oz skeet loads as well. Gas operated actions also do a better job of smoothing out recoil.

Inertial is better they say.

But you must ask permission from todbartell to even think about semiautomatics. He'll tell you all about it..... get a bolt action...
