I Have an M-14 and i was reading some postes earlier about staying away from bullet weights above 168gr. or something like that, just curious as to way and what will it do? And also i would like some feedback on what type of ammo would be best used in my toy. Currently i am using winchester FMJ's 147gr. but when i hunt with it i use winchester 180gr. SP's

Thanx Hans

Try it all and see. Every gun is different, but if your winchester ammunition is working fine for you then i'd stick with that. I usually just use whatever is cheapest at the time...

As for bullet weights, some say don't go over 160gr and some say it doesn't matter. Friends of mine use 180gr bullets in their M14's with no problems at all.

The operating cycle of the M14 was designed for the 150 gr bullet (147 gr really). I've competed extensively with 168's without any troubles at all. I mean the operating rod battering that the US Marine Teams in Camp Perry experienced back in 1997 when they were still shooting the 175 gr. Sierra MK 's.

Maybe you are not getting any problems right now, but certainly many, many 180 grainers later, will take their toll on your op rod.

I imagine a few 180 gr. bullets will not hurt the unit.... I'm not willing to do this with my Douglas bbl'ed match guns. Just be safe !

Cheers,
Barney

Didn't Skullboy said that US Matine Teams shoot 180 grain bullets but they rebuild their rifles every year plus have tons of spare parts.
I think I read that a while back if I remember correctly.

Paulinski; don't forget that a "Marine-year" for an M14 target rifle rifle is about 5,000 rounds.

A few dozen 180s in standard .308 loadings are unlikely to hurt a robust design like the M14, although I do think that 165s would be a better choice.

yep- that's exactly what he said- us civilans with limited pocketbooks /spare parts HAVE to stick to 170's and lighter- find another gun for the 180's - the odd box won't hurt, but you never know when somethings going to let go- i'd rather not take the chance at all

I followed Mysticplayers advice and am very happy with the results .
They are reloads but they work very well .
168 grain nosler boattail match , neck sized fireformed brass , cci match primers and h4895 powder , the only thing I did different is I put a factory crimp on them . I'll try a few other loads and tinker with this one as well but these worked far better than any factory ammo I used .

Best m14 ammo

The M14 was designed to shoot a 147grn round you should only use what the manufacturer recommends after all they designed and built the rifle. It's true that shooting over 168grn bullets will damage the op rod over time.
