Anyone out there care to share their wisdom about .17 calibres?

What would you recommend for a reasonably priced plinker?
Semi-auto preferred.

They tried producing semi 17's and found them to be have terribly unsafe loading issues and took them off the market. All the reviews I read before buying my 17 hmr put the savage model 93 as the best 17 for the money and comes with the heavy barrel and accutrigger as standard. Now that I have the savage I'd say all the great reviews were bang on.

Semi-auto .17HMRs aren't perfected yet.

Henry does make a .17HMR levergun, though; action is faster than a boltgun. Never handled one so I couldn't comment on their quality, though Henry is a pretty good name.

I have a Savage and a CZ 452, both excelent. I think the 452 is slightly more accurate but that is pure conjecture and I have no proof.

I don't shoot a lot of paper and most of my shooting is done free hand

No semi-autos, eh? Hrm! I didn't know that. What's so difficult about engineering one? The bullet not heavy enough to generate enough recoil to work the bolt?

Pressure issues and loading issues; the semis that have gone out have had problems with the cartridge going off bang with the bolt wide open. Pretty dangerous stuff.

I believe Volquartsen makes a 17hmr semi. Now being they are in the States there would be plenty of hoops to jump through to get one up here, but...

Volquartson makes a reliable 17 HMR semi auto. They run around in the $1400 to $2000 depending upon configuration. Sylvester source for sports in Bonnyville Alberta and Miarms Co Edmonton carry them.
