I have been goose hunting for a while now and only really bothered with ducks when they come into my goose spread or fly low over my blind...BUT this year I am getting into duck hunting. I have a small black mallard call, but it sounds like something half dead when i use it ( granted it might be my lack of skills). What would you recomend in a entry level call.
thanks

I will venture to say that looking for and trying to learn at the start of goose season might not be the best time to start.
But, check out Olt calls and maybe some online video tutorials...
Opening morning isnt a good time to practice ;)

This may be heresy to some, but my view is that the call itself is of lesser importance than the mastery of basic technique and the discipline to refrain from calling at all in many situations.

But for an inexpensive and effective recommendation, I'd suggest the basic Haydel double reed call--the clear plastic model that sells for about twenty bucks.

So I took Dscotts advice and got a nasty2. While I was at Cabelas I picked up a Gardern 6n1 wistle and they had the QuackHead Rainmaker in the bargain cave for 30% off so I grabed on of those. WOW... what a difference that made, both the nasty2 and the Rainmaker sound right and are super easy to use. The 6n1 wistle takes about 5 minutes of practice and watching a couple videos, but once you see/ hear how its used it so so easy to make the Mallard Drake, Pintail and widgeon calls.

Zink ATM green machine Was my first call and it is a darn good one. I like the sound, it works for me and no matter how much moisture it collects, it just keeps on working. It's not cheap but I'm a believer in the so often used phrase "buy once cry once"
