Hello all, this is my first foray into optics. I've shot a red dot, I'm not sure which model, but have only owned iron sights.
I've tried to read what I can but some threads are older and the choices are too vast.

I would like a red dot for my Type 97 (mlok).
Shooting will be mainly range, possibly competition. Leaning towards close quarter shooting, might look into magnification to reach out with the 556 but that would come later.
Just looking for a good purchase for my money.

So far I've seen the Holosun HS515GM recommended more than once. It would represent the top of what I assume I need. The Sig Romeo5 is just over half of the Holosun, and I don't see why this would be a bad choice either. It loses the shake awake feature which isn't a deal breaker.
I'm trying to not find the cheapest option but I really don't know what I am looking for either so I'm worried I'll overspend.

Anyone have any input for me or a better starting place to figure this out?
Thanks

Sig-Sauer Romeo 5 all the way. I've killed many a red dot in my day, and this one's a tank! Liked it so much, went out and bought two more. Shake feature is great for battery life, and 2moa dot is small enough for serious rifle work. BTW - on sale this weekend at Cabelas for $179, may even pick up another one lol

I 2nd the sig romeo5. Great red dot for the price and I've been considering picking up a 2nd ;)
The cabelas $179 sale option comes with the high mount only. If you need a lower profile mount for a shotgun I'd suggest a $20 mount from Aliexpress vs the stock $80-120 ones you'll find on Amazon or from most local shops.

Vortex crossfire. I run one on a x95 and one on a 10/22. Seen tons of rounds, remained zeroed, were 199$. Battery life is 50,000 hours on mid setting.

For the price they are great.

I have a Sig Romeo 5 and a Holosun 503c series. I had had zero issues with either. The Holosun has a a solar feature that I like but with a 50 thousand hour battery life its really not an issue.

Great suggestions thank you so far. I haven't made a decision yet, I'm watching reviews now.
I won't be using it on a shotgun. If we could get our OICs running it'll swap to another rifle but for now it's just the 97.
