Ive been reading a bit about casting lead ammo, specifically for .30-30 in the 170gr range with gas checks for faster velocity. I know that a lot of rifles like over sized lead rounds, but how much is too much? Would you recommend .309 or .311? Also would the neck of the case need to be resized a little larger to seat in the .311 rounds?

I've cast and shot a few hundred Lyman 311041's through my 94 Winchester. Most were sized at 310. No problem with chambering in my gun. The 310's also chamber fine in a Rem 788. One or 2 thou over bore size is usually recommended. Resize your cases in regular sizer die but you should then use a neck expander/flare die. (Just like straight walled pistol cases). I usually use a caliber specific Lyman M die but Lee also makes a universal neck expansion die which will work for nearly all calibers.
Lee also makes FP 30 cal moulds in 150 and 170 gr models. I have cast some nice bullets from Lee moulds in 7 and 8 mm. Lee rifle moulds seem to work well if you follow directions. Lee is about a third of the cost of new lyman moulds
Good luck with your venture into the world of cast bullet shooting.

i cast standard classic lee "soup can" 150gr, they make 170gr also.
like he said, flare your case opening with a round ball or lee die if you want to buy one.

bullet size depends on your rifle, i had a 64 winchester that liked 308 modern marlin 336 microgroove take 311 i think.

get the most cavities for your buck, its better to have 2++ bullets at a time than 1. its a real pain to cast one at a time, trust me.

I cast a RCBS 30-150-FN mold that throws wheelweight lead at 165gr with a gas check, sized and lubed at .310 dia.

Nice wide flat nose on it too, under it I use SR4759 powder and try to keep the velocity at around 1800 fps, gives me nice 2-3 inch group at 100 using receiver sight and the factory front post sight on a early 80s Mdl 94.

I have shot .311 dia but my results are better at .310 sizing.
