I'd like to buy an air-pistol to practice drawing and plinking while I wait for my r/pal, att etc...

I've been reading a bit about them today, but haven't shot a bb gun since I was 12.
I'll get something under 495 fps to stay legal, but I'm wondering if I have to spend a lot to get any enjoyment out of it, or will a $50 M&P be just close enough to reality that it'll tide me over between range visits where I get to shoot my friends pistols?

Any recommendations on a quality air pistol that doesn't break the bank?
I'd like to stay under $100, but will spend more if I have to, to get something I will actually enjoy.

I might get something like this, and one of those small steel targets unless you guys convince me that it's a waste.

Are you looking for accuracy? or realism?

There are a lot of pistols that look nice but are very inaccurate. Most BB blowback guns are like shooting a shotgun.

If you want accuracy, pellets are generally the most accurate. A crosman 2240 with a reddot is fairly accurate, however they require CO2 and .22 pellets. A beeman P17 is a .177 SSP that is pretty accurate too.
 
I'd like accuracy and realism... all for a low price. That's asking too much I'm sure. :D But as long as it's accurate out to 20 or 30', I'll be happy.
I figure if I have fun with a handgun, I may get the mp5 later as it's the only way I'll get to own that particular model. lol

CO2 seems fairly inexpensive, so I don't think I'll mind buying cartridges when I'm out of pellets.
Are there any pistols that don't use CO2, and does it get annoying to always pump air?
 
I'd like something that holds 10-20 pellets to practice quick target acquisition.
I could do that with a SSP, but it'll be more fun and realistic with a mag.
 
I have the M&P45 from Umerix, and its better than the bb gun version. It uses a metal revolving cylinder that holds 10 177 pellets, or a plastic one that hold bb's. Its a very close match to the real thing, but not as smooth shooting double action as the real thing. Great for realism in drawing and firing.

I've had a few pistols made by Umarex and they are very nice and realistic. My personal favourite is the HK P30. There are some blowback models and they are nice but generaly not vey accurate and hard on the air, usually about 30 - 40 shots per cylinder. The Desert Eagle model was actually quite accurate, although the 5 or 6 inch rifled barrel helped a bit I'm sure.

Of all the ones I've had, the only ones I've kept are the HK P30, HK USP and the Makarov, all made by Umarex and pretty good quality at a decent price.
 
If you have a tooltown store, this target is great because it collects the pellets. I can't get it to reset though. You are supposed to shoot the middle circle to release them back up. I think the magnets are too strong. In any event, its a nice target for basement or garage use. Around $40-$50

I've been watching some Magpul Dynamics, and Travis Haley's new dvd's as well.
My buddies all shoot really well, and go over how important the fundamentals are.

I want to be able to practice grip, sight picture, trigger control, breathing, etc... with this bb gun.
Hopefully the weight of the gun and trigger is close enough to the real thing that practicing with it makes an improvement on my shooting.

I can't make it to the range for a couple weeks, so I'm gonna but an air pistol today and see what difference it makes when shoot my friends pistols. One guy has a .22 1911 and it's always fun to shoot in between 9mm guns.
This air gun will be almost as fun until I can get my own .22 and Glock 17 in a few months+... and even then, for times between range visits. I'm not sure why I didn't get one sooner.


Do you guys find that they help your pistol shooting?

I disagree. The umerix S&W45 feels exactly the same in hand, and the sights are precisely identical to the S&W40 I own. Only difference is the trigger and recoil.

And yes, it helps your pistol shooting. Its the same fundemental skills aside from recoil management for fast follow up shots.
