hey all,

i'm mostly (almost totally) into handguns, but once in a while i wouldn't mind having some fun with a rifle. i've shot an SKS, some old lever-action thing, and an HK SL8 (holy cow that's sweet!!!)

i can't afford or justify an SL8, since i'm guessing they're well over $2k, and this would just be a casual toy.

what would you recommend? something along those lines (AR'ish as opposed to target), but at a much lower price point. preferrably shooting .223 since i can reload those on my existing press. oh, and something that would make sense at shorter distances, like 25 yards as opposed to 300+ yards.

Have you considered the Norc M4s? AR goodness, at around the $600 price mark.

If you're not looking to spend a fortune, it's a pretty great place to start.

Could also look at a Ruger Mini 14........

Well, a used SL8 in perfect condition would be about $1900 on the forums. I see your point though, its still alot for a casual shooter.

I'd recommend the Norinco M4, maybe add some magpul goodies to it.

Actually a guy is selling a nice retro styled Norinco AR-15 on the EE right now. Under $700 all in I think.

If I had not just picked up a G36-P and a Remington 700 in .338 Lapua, I would be all over it.

A cheaper choice is a Ruger PC9 carbine, uses 9mm pistol ammo and pistol (10 rounds) mags. It is also available in .40 cal.

Hmm, I'll have to take a look at this one. I'm actually using .40S&W for my handguns so that would be nice (I don't use 9mm). I also shoot 38/357 in case there's stuff chambered for that.
