My pooch blew out his ACL at 11 pm last night.

Was diagnosed with ruptured ACL at the midnapore animal hospital at midnight and we are looking for a first hand recommendation for a good vetenary surgeon in the Calgary or surrounding area to do the op as soon as possible.

Anyone know of a good one?

Our vet is great but doesn't do this surgery.

Any first hand recommendations are appreciated.

Dr. Remedios at the Fish Creek clinic. She did the TPLO on my 9 year old lab last summer, and her surgery and recovery were 100% perfect in every respect.

If you have other animals or kids in your home, PM me and I'll give you something that will help your dog's recovery.

Take your dog out of the city of Calgary for the surgery. The City vet hospitals and emergency centers are all chain owned for the most part and their prices are absurd. Head out to Okotoks or High River - the price will be cut by 1/3. Do you have vet insurance? (A little late for it now, and if you do sign up for it future ACL injuries on that leg wont be covered as they will be considered pre existing).

Ultrasound on my dog in Calgary: $585
Ultrasound on my dog in High River: $340
Xray on my dog in Calgary: $155
Xray on my dog in High River: $110

Skillset to do the ACL recon or plateau levelling osteotomy outside of Calgary: likely non existent.

If you want a good old school vet, go see Wayne Steiger in Black Diamond, but I doubt he'll do an ACL.

Thanks all

Found a vet in Okotoks who has done hundreds of these and will be doing the ACL TPLO and came recommended.

Many thanks again

Marc

Veterinary Surgeon is Dr. Connery at Care Centre Animal Hospital in Calgary, we were told Okotoks but he is in Calgary.

For future consideration, if you don't mind the drive, talk to your Vet about a reference to the Vet College in Saskatoon.

Took my Scottish Deerhound there for an impacted salivary gland that blew out the side of her face. They gave me an acceptable quote on the expected cost, and were under it by 1/3 by the time we were done. All in, I was very pleased with the service there and I can commend the school for running a heck of a clinic.

Cheers

I've heard good things about the Vet college in SK, but you do need to factor travel and accommodations into your cost.

Ayup.

I spent 4 days there bouncing from hotel to hotel as they were mostly booked up. To the plus side, the folks at Future Shop were good with me killing a couple afternoons there watching movies on the 80 inch TV with surround sound that they had set up in front of a comfy leather chair... :)
Still, between the price differences from clinic to clinic, and the quality of care, I think it still came out pretty cheap in the long run.

So I thought I would give an update on the TPLO surgery my 15 year old shepard blue heeler cross had this past thursday.

The surgeon, Dr. Connery, was hesitant to do the surgery given Deco's age, but could not believe he was 15 and given his activity level and the way he acts (like a young 6 year old) he agreed to do it. This pooch still goes on 15-20 k hikes with me with tons of energy left over. He used to come on 50k plus mountain bike rides when he was 10.

Dr. Connery at the CARE animal hospital in Calgary was awesome. We picked up our pooch Friday at 9:00 am and he was weight bearing with just a bit of a limp. Since then he has shown steady improvement and only needs the tummy sling going up or down stairs. His gait is slow and a little tentative but almost 100% normal.

Removed his dressing today and the incisiion is way cleaner than the incisions I had from bilateral knee replacements a few years back, with zero seepage.

I would highly recommnend this surgeon if your furry family member / furbaby ever requires orthopedic surgery.

One relieved and happy dad.

My wife is a vet here in ontario but she shares information with a few doctors on VIN from the Care clinic in Calgary and you picked the right people to take care of your best friend.

Glad he is getting better, if you want a second opinion on anything PM me and my wife will give you her take.

Good luck.

Glad your dog's outcome so far is good. Please, make sure to follow the recovery/rehab schedule (should be about 16 weeks) very carefully. As I'm sure you were admonished at the clinic, his risk of re-injury is extreme for a while, and he will seem recovered faster than his bones are really healing!
