I am also considering the same question here for the most part. (So I'm intending to part hijack this thread, rather than starting a new thread on the same topic)
I'm not necessarily looking for an entry level .30-06. I have decided that 30-06 is the calibre I want. Just part of "The Trio" .22lr, 12 ga, .30-06 for my first firearms. I've already got the .22 and the 12 ga, now I'm trying to research what specific rifle I'm interested.
I do know a lot to do with picking a rifle has to do with how it feels.
I don't really care too much about the kind of mag, whether attached, or box. So long as the ammunition is chambered when I cycle the action I don't care.
My intent is for a hunting rifle. Probably more stalking than treestanding or baiting most like. So I want something that's not too heavy.
What I do want is info on actions and triggers.
Some of my considerations include:
Better model 700s
Weatherby Vanguard
Winchester M70 Featherlight (from suggestions in this thread)
Tikka T3 hunter
Browning X-Bolt Medallion
I'm more than willing to save up for something good, that I won't have to put too much work into to get on target. I won't be purchasing until the end of summer most likely. Planning on my tax return and some extra savings to be able to afford.
I already have a scope. I got a Leupold VX 2 3-9x40 on my .22 right now. (Purchased with the intent to go onto a hunting rifle eventually. I think I'll buy something with higher magnification for the .22 at the same time, but that's not part of this discussion...)
I won't say that money is not an object, but I am willing to spend a bit more on a quality rifle, rather than get an extry level model that I will want to exchange/upgrade eventually. I really want my first 3 firearms to be keepers. So far I think I'm doing ok. Ruger 10/22, 870 Supermag. Both new. I want a 3rd...hunting rifle in .30-06. Something that I'll keep forever and hand down in time.
Anyhow. I've looked through Tradex, definatly good deals there. But I think I want something new. Just so it's mine. Until I run it into the ground and MUST get a new one. I think though, that if I get something quality to start with I won't have to worry about that.
So...suggestions for me?
