Almost halfway through loading up a 400 round batch of 308 and I noticed a vertical scratch on the brass on the last 5 or so.

I have never had this issue before (I’ve been reloading 30 odd years) so I inspected the dies. When I removed the hornady custom grade bullet seating die from the press lo and behold there was a burr on the inside. Quite a large one. WTF?

After trying normal things like a wooden dowel with 400 grit sandpaper wrapped around it, then a small file, Then trying to scrape the burr with a small screwdriver, I got frustrated and chucked the die in the lathe and attempted to knock the bur down using a small boring bar and SNAFU, lets just say it is a monumental effup. This die has the bullet guide thingy that did not look like it was capable of being removed which promptly made contact with the boring bar during the boring operation. Not pretty.

So now I am in the market for a new bullet seating die, preferably with a micrometer as I load for several rifles (bulk / plinking, hunting, and precision) using different projectiles and I figure using a micrometer and recording the settings for different projectiles would speed up the setup when switching between the different loads.

Can anyone recommend a decent quality bullet seating die that comes with a micrometer for preferably under $150 CDN if such a beast exists for around that price?

Many thanks in advance.

I have micrometer dies by Redding Forster and and RCBS
The RCBS die is an inline seater which I like, but the Redding is as good as is the Forster.
If I had to pick one itwould likely be the Redding.

I have a couple of the Redding Competition micrometer seater dies.

I also use Hornady dies and presses.
Give Hornady a call on Monday.
They used to have some very humorous automated messages.
Tell them what you did and most likely they will send you out replacement parts for your existing die.
Hornady sells micrometers that fit their seating dies.
