Hello all!
I am in search of a gunsmith to do a deactivation on a luger. I am not so concerned with the price to get it done as I am with getting it done well and in a reasonable time frame. Who would you recommend?

PLEASE do not turn this into a "morals of deactivation" thread! It will be deactivated, I just want to know where would be the best place to get it done!

It is sold to a gentleman that does not have a firearms lic. He wishes to have a luger, but is in no way interested in getting a firearms lic. Not my first choice, but he was willing to pay a good price for it deactivated.

how do you figure? Of course it's not as preferential as passing it onto another 12(x) license holder, but they're few & far between, and getting fewer with each passing year. If you ask me, Being able to hold, touch and feel something is a hell of a lot more desirable than having it eliminated entirely. If given the choice between the two, I would absolutely take a DEWAT over it's melted weight in iron bar. Perhaps you'd rather have the steel bar?

Sorry - Deactivated is the same as the smelter

Indeed, atleast in the smelter they might make it into a functioning firearm, Everyone uses computers now, no use for a fancy paperweight. Also don't call it a pistol after it is dewatted, If it is welded shut, it is just a piece of art.

That is all.

I have done some, but that was when I still had the shop, In Saskatoon, try Kerry Higgins at Saskatoon Gunshoppy, Ave C.N
Regina TNT? Maybe? There are others., Again What area?
I dewated a new unfired Belg. FN FAL, I had in stock because he wanted one and had the money.
Mind you ,the rules on how it is done have changed in last couple of years.

Just curious if he is paying more than what rebarreled Lugers go for. They seem to hit $1200+ easy on the exchange.**

Hard to imagine someone shelling out that and more for a lump of inert steel than what they could find replicted in a BB gun for next to nothing, comparatively.

** I'd like such a Luger someday :(

From the sounds of it, getting one neutered is as tough as having one re barrelled. Best of luck in your search. I have a Luger in transit that I will need to get rebarrelled. Hate to do it to something that's been in a drawer since 1945 but I won't let the smelter have it. If deact was the only option I'd do that too.
