Just got myself a Tikka in .30-06 and am looking for a decent quality optic to put on it. Would like to buy new, budget around $300. Right now I'm thinking a Nikon Prostaff 3-9, or a Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9. Let me know your suggestions about other scopes or opinions about these two!

Given your budget either one will do the job. I personally lean towards Leupold because I feel its a little lighter in weight and I prefer the aesthetics over the Nikon.
Edit: Rumor has it Nikon is changing its entire scope line and will be heavily discounting current models.

Vortex Viper 3-9x40 on clearance for $299

I love the lever on the magnification adjustment ring for a hunting rifle, especially with gloves on. Makes it really nice to use.

Are you using the rifle for hunting, Target shooting or both?

I know you said you wanted to buy new but consider a scope from the EE. You can double what you get for your dollar.

I have a VX-2 3-9x40 on my '06 and really like it. Performance-wise it is probably the same as the VX freedom. Shot a bear 3 minutes before legal light ended and was glad I didn't have a cheap scope!

Yeah, its worth it for the better glass and beefier and more positive adjustments. You'll forget the difference in price on the way home, but the scope will likely be with you forever.
