Hello, I'm looking to get a .22 mag rifle (else .22 cal) that's semi-automatic and has the the options for a red dot sight mount and an extended magazine. If anyone has some suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Ruger SR-22 hands down

or.... you could get a ruger 10/22 and buy a maurader kit for it (or any other kit you like). But the SR-22 is a nice looking (non-restricted) gun!

Below is a list of places I have (or soon will) purchase from:

Hical.ca - promag magazines and maybe an auto bolt release if I'm feelin too lazy to do it myself haha

ca.wholesalesports.com - purchased my sr-22, red dot scope and case for a decent price

dlaskarms.com - purchased a set of 4 full length rails

Questar.ca - purchased a pws T3 mag release

Tactical-mod.ca - (airsoft and paintball website) purchased a Magpul PTS AFG (angled fore grip). I would buy this from hical if you are purchasing other items as well since the fore grip ended up costing about the same after shipping if I bought it from hical in the first place (depending on how much hical charges for shipping on multiple items)

Those are the places I have found in Canada that had parts I wanted. I find that the best strategy is to browse the sponsored stores for the forum (all those advertisements at the top of the page) and decide on what parts you like. I also did a lot of google image searches to see what the parts looked like installed to help me decide. Once you have a list of parts you want, make a list of places that supply them or send an email to see if they can order it for you. If that doesn't work, start a thread about where to purchase the item and a dealer might PM you

Here is a pic of an SR-22 (not my SR-22) with a red dot, rails, promag magazine (also comes in 50 round drums) and an angled fore grip

if you want to go cheap go with the Mossberg .22 Tactical. Mostly plastic but, a lot of fun and lots of rails and Non-Restricted.

I think this is the one you need. I'm not a big fan of black guns, or 597s, but I've been tempted to buy this one! .22WMR, semi-auto.

Th eMossberg looks OK but after watching the dis-assembly video on YouTube I crossed it off the list. And I really don't like the mag change procedure on the plinksters. Too fiddly. Having said that I haven't actuallt shot one so takle that with a grain of salt.

I've seen the sr-22 on ca.wholesalesports.com go for $520. I went into my local wholesale sports store and bought the rifle, case and speed loader for $620 after tax. He gave me a discount on the case and rifle. Ended up paying about $480 + tax on the sr-22. I can't guarantee you can get that same deal, but $520 is a good price as well.

You should also know that the accessories for the sr-22 can quickly add up in cost. So far I have spent about $900-$1000 on everything (this includes the rifle). If you want a cheaper option I would vote for the ruger 10/22 with a marauder kit. You're looking at $230 for the ruger 10/22 (from wholesalesports) and approx $200 for the marauder kit. The marauder kit comes with sights where the sr-22 doesn't. $430 + tax gets you a rifle ready to shoot, whereas the sr-22 will cost $520 + the cost of any sights/scopes you may put on it + tax.

Again, if you have the cash to spend, I vote for the sr-22. If money is a little tight, the marauder kit is also very nice and was a close 2nd choice for me when I bought my sr-22. I might buy a marauder kit and 10/22 down the road.

Well if it's .22mag semi auto you are after (which I thought the thread was about) I'd also say the Remington 597 in .22mag looks like an awesome gun for the same price as an SR-22. However, if you don't have a .22lr yet, I'd go for the SR-22 if you want one that will be at home with a red dot and hi-cap magazine. They look fun...

Put me down for another vote for the Marauder-equipped 10/22. I looked at 22WMR, but the cost of ammo is considerably higher (like 5X to 8X higher)

The choice will depend on what you want the rifle for. If your intent is to use it for 100 yds.+ varminting, then the WMR is likely the best choice. However, as this article states, the WMR is possibly too much rifle for hunting small game (rabbits etc.) at closer ranges, as it tends to "blow them apart".

If your primary goal is normal plinking, small game at sub-100-yd. ranges, etc., I'd stick with the .22LR. Still a riot to shoot, much lower stresses on the gun means longer life, and shoot at a fraction of the cost. Plus - have you ever seen a store that carries any ammo that doesn't have .22LR? The .22WMR is far less common in stores in my experience.

22 mag in the OP.

Magnum research, or an Original 10/22 mag. Also H&K makes one that's supposed to be good, but I've never shot one.

22 mag is very expensive to use in a semi, a Marlin 983T is a mini sniper rifle in 22 mag, mine shoot .6 .7 at 100 metres all day long with a Redfield Revolution 4X12X40 Accu-range and 40 gr solid winny ammo, as for the SR-22, it did bring back accuracy in the 10-22 basic rifle family it is the most accurate 22 lr out of the box without modifications, easy moa with Stinger ammo at 100 metres, all the other 22 lr are looking up at the SR-22, as an insurance it is a good preventive mesure to locktite every screw possible on the SR-22, this is a great rifle... I gotta agree with caramel

The .22 Mag is best suited to a bolt gun that can make best use of the accuracy and velocity advantage the more stout cartridge offers.

If you want a fun tacticool semi auto then I would suggest sticking with .22 LR options. Especially when you realize how much ammo you go through.

I have to admit I am biased to the Ruger 10/22 platform because of the aftermarket support and customizing options. However many have been happy with other options.
