I currently own a Winchester 490 Semi-Auto which fires .22 LR but I'd like to replace it with a bolt-action rifle in case the Liberal's manage to take our semi-auto's away.

I have two questions really. I'm just looking to punch paper and hunt small game like rabbits at 100 yards or less so should I stick with .22 LR or go for .22 WMR or maybe even .17 HMR or .17 HM2?

Also, what’s everyone’s recommendation for a good quality, smooth operating, bolt-action rimfire? Price range is $600 to $800.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

I've been thinking about a Ruger but still not sure of which caliber to adopt. I'm thinking that .22LR should do fine because of how cheap the ammo is and the different kinds available. Is the 17 HMR much more accurate at 100 yards then the .22LR?

Tough one, I like 'em all, But if I could only have one, 22 WMR . I really like the CZ 452 Lux , with open sights, it points like a dream. Sights a breeze to setup(tune sights to ammo). And the best part , a beautiful rifle that I like to carry.
Caliber covers Coyote like none of the others, another bonus.

If you look at it in a cost per box of ammo, they are similar for accuracy, a $15 box of LR ammo is gonna help get you accuracy from a good rifle. depending on conditions, equipment , ammo. the LR will get you something, the 17 HMR is like a laser , and will get you hits on dogs that are far away. Was planning on trying the new 20 gr. gonna try 'em on grouse this week , and try to see what effects they would have on a Coyote. Figure out some test to try,

I'd go with a .17 if you plan to hunt with it..everyone ive spoken to has said nothing but good things about that cartridge..

I have a Reminton 541T and a russian TOZ bolt action rifle (Winchester sells them now with a nicer stock and a polished bolt). Both are superbly accurate but the Remington gets my nod as it is quite a bit smoother and much more care and attention went into the fit and finish. I have also heard very good things about the Savage .22lr rifles.

I own a Marlin 25N, which is a .22lr, bolt action. I love it. It is very smooth shooting and I have it dialed in at 50 years to hit the head of a tac with a fixed 4x scope I put on it. I have had it for two years now and still love it. At time of purchase it cost me $325 including rings, scope and extra 10rnd mag as it only comes with a 7rnd. The barrel is blued and wood stock on it. I like it so much I was thinking about buying the same version in semi-auto. I have never had any problems taking out gophers with it at 100yds either. Don't know about rabbits can't remember the last time I shot one.

If you're not sure what caliber to get, here's an option. Right now I'm in the process of building switch barrel gun out of a 77/22 Ruger. The action is the same for 22lr, 17hm2, 17hmr, and 22wmr. I will be using 2 stocks and for now three calibers, 22lr, 17hmr and 22wmr. The only thing that is different is the trigger guard, 22lr and 17hm2 are the same and 17hmr and 22wmr are the same. I picked up the gun (started as a 22lr) for $569 at local Can Tire, bought the trigger guard from Brownells for $45 US, and I found the 17hmr and 22wmr barrels on the Green Mountain website for $149.95 US for the pair. I bought a Ross thumbhole stock for the 77 from Boyd's gunstocks at $89 US unfinished. Kind of reminiscent of the Sako kit, but quite a bit cheaper. Later.

Since this thread is about a bolt action, I assume you are talking about a 77/22 or 77/17?

I wouldn't. My ruger 77/22 was probably the most disappointing .22 I have bought. I traded it away at a big loss and was glad to see it go.
