Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen!
Feeling the urge to acquire a slick tactical semi - narrowing down to a TacOrd VersaMax or a Benelli M4. (Or possible M2)
Mainly for target / 3 gun if the world gets normal again, and fantasy home defence / zombie apocalypse type of stuff.
Has anyone handled both? Feedback from either party? I appreciate that the M4 is the golden standard, but the TacOrd setup sounds promising...
I owned a Versamax and M4 - both reworked by Tactical Ordnance.
It is a tough call as they are both awesome guns but for 3 gun it would be the Versamax every time. The advantages are as follows:
1) MASSIVE loading port - the Versamax was a 3.5" gun (unofficially) so the loading port was big to begin with, and by the time Tac Ord had worked their magic it makes for pretty easy quad loading. Even with a Tac Ord makeover on my M4 the Versamax was still much easier to load.
2) The Versamax holds one more round than the M4 at the start. The extra round is handy for sure.
3) I found the trigger on my Versamax much lighter / better than the M4.
4) The bead sight on the Versamax is better for 3 gun type applications than the ghost ring sights on the M4 due to the height over bore. I found a bead setup fast to pickup and easier to use over a range of distances than the ghost rings. With the extra height over bore I found the ghost rings shot too low at close range targets often found at 3 gun type competitions and I had to aim slightly high to compensate. Please note I am not knocking ghost rings - they are fully adjustable and make the gun a tack driver for slugs at distance.
5) With Remington going through a transition phase getting parts may be difficult until they find their feet again. If you are buying new I wouldn't let it discourage me as the Versamax was very reliable but if you did need parts they may not be available for a little while.
I would recommend the A&J trigger guard for either gun (I got one for each) - it has a U shaped groove that makes a little more room for easier / faster loading. A red dot can be fitted to each (picatinney rail on the M4 and Tac Ord makes the TOMM (Tac Ord Mini Mount) for the Versamax if that is something you desire.
