I'm looking for a bolt action to build 223 for a rem 700 short footprint. Should feed from from AICS magazines.

What would you recommend? I'm mostly concerned about feeding and extraction/ejection. Would I need a conical breech on a barrel to make it better on a .378" boltface?

Any other issues I need to think about with this setup?

My 223 is built on an origin action. Feeds and extracts without issue. I have all the bolt heads for it as well so I run multiple calibers on that action

Is your barrel pre-fit to Origin or just thread with a barrel nut? Do you know if it is a conical breech?

I have 2 shouldered barrels for my origin. I have also run barrel nut barrels on it but shouldered are better. It is not a conical breech. The origin is control round feed with a mechanical ejector

My thinking was it was more of a technical issue rather than "I bought 223 Savage and its fine from the box", but I should probably reconsider.

What technical issue? You made it sound like you were looking for an action to build off for a 223 based on a Remington 700 footprint. There are a tonne of options available with various feature sets and varying price points. You seem focused on an issue that's not an issue being feeding and ejection with a flat bolt face vs coned. I believe the 223ai can be finicky for feeding in some control feed actions, but literally every action being produced is offered with a 223 bolt head so it must be a viable option

Avoid fat bolt actions and you will be fine, the fat bolt forces the magazine to sit slightly lower below the bore axis.

223 feeds fine in a AICS mag and Remington 700 bolt/breeching. Magazines with the extended feed lips like the metal ruger scout mag or the mdt metal mag will feed the best.

You won’t find any out of the box mags that will allow more than 2.5”-ish oal but that’s enough for 75-77 class bullets.

Is geometry of MDT metal mag any different from MDT plastic mag?

Yes, forward extended feed lips.

The regular mags like the original Accurate Mag metal or the Gen 1 mdt will work, but the ones with the extended lips are more forgiving with different oal or having the bolt cycled slowly.
