So I'm on the market for a new Coyote rig.

I thought about a Savage Axis package until I went to WSS and got to hold one. Wow.......crappiest trigger I have run across yet. I guess you get what you pay for.

Looked at 16 SS Trophy Hunter w/accutrigger but Savages new mag design does not look like it will hold up with its plastic u shaped clip and it did not go into the mag well very easily. Nothing like my 111 with the metal mag retention. Looks like savage is using this design for most of their lines now.

Anyway, I have a few "requirements" for this new rig:
1. Must have detachable mag (I dislike floor plates)
2. Prefer Stainless
3. .223 or 22-250 (22-250 preferred)
4. Bare rifle under $600

Suggestions?

I picked up a T3 Tikka in 223 a couple years ago, but it was a bit more than your projected price back then.
It has an 8" twist and will handle heavier bullets with superb accuracy, also its light enough to pack all day.
Will send you a PM.

Here is what I use to have, has a steel dbm. Only reason I sold it was because my friend really wanted it and I mostly use my cz527. Some of the smaller savage dealers get the model 11/111 with the steel mag and a bit better (not much better) scope as a way to compete with the big box stores selling the same rifle

This is my hunting gun in .270 with the "good" mag that I was talking about. I upgraded the scope on the .270 though and the package scope is now on my current Coyote gun.

The only option that link has for a Varmint caliber would be .243 but I know that cartridge is not very fur friendly.

Thanks though.

Call them and order one, they are good people, they could possibly even drop ship it to you in 22-250

I had 223 Rem as my coyote rifle for the longest time and on shots beyond say 250yds it is short in delivered energy department IMHO. 22-250 Rem is perfect for this but it burns barrels quite quick and something between those cartridges would be an ideal coyote medicine.
Enter 225 Win. I wonder why it's not more popular. Recently I rebarreled my LH Sportco into 225 Win with medium heavy 26" barrel and couldn't be happier about smooth feeding, excelent accuracy, decent performance and much quieter than 22-250 Rem.

I've never considered the 225 win. I'm going to have to look into that a bit more. I happen to really enjoy my 204, but I am always shooting far distances, usually in the wind and up /down a hill. That is why I got the 22-250, but I've come to believe that was more of a perceived issue, more than likely the issue is on my end not the calibre.

So I was in "impulse buy" mode and opted to go with a Savage Light Weight Hunter in 6.5 Creedmoor that was up for sale on the EE.

Ya I know, the only criteria it fit from my OP was the detach mag. :D Oh.....and the price point.

Anyway, thanks for the input.
