As above I am looking for a recommendation for a sub $500 1 x 4 or 1 x 6 illuminated optic.

Will be used on 9mm and 556 / 223 for plinking.

Must haves are long battery life / auto shut off, crisp bright reticle (preferably BDC type for the 556).

Throw lever would be nice but I can make one if necessary.

Anyone with any first hand recommendations?

Many thanks in advance.

Sig is the only one im aware of that has MOTAC on their scopes. Battery life on LPVO is typically abysmal compared to a red dot. Bright reticles are few and far between.

Bushnell, SIG (you missed the deals at Tenda this week).

I would be looking at a Primary Arms Prism (or Red Dot) and a magnifier.

I ran a Bushnell AR Optics 1-4 for a bit, it was alright. Not the best glass ever, but it was good enough for 3-gun. They come in 1-8 now for less than $500.

That or you might be able to find a used 1-6 Strike Eagle for less than $500.

Edit: But none of them have auto shut-off. The illumination on scopes with etched reticles is typically a knob, not many have auto shut-off. You'll be limiting your options to almost nothing if you HAVE to have that feature. Looks like Sig and Eotech have them, both WELL over $500. Or you could get a Trijicon and not worry about batteries, but again, orders of magnitude over your $500 budget. Auto shut-off seems to be a premium feature. You might be sh!t outa luck.

i had and still have the bushnell ar 1-4 for 5.56, black out and the ak ones and one 1-8 for 5.56 none are top of the line that is a given but they re for my eyes very good and there is another point the red part of is working even under heavy sun if that can help.

none has the auto illumination shake and move but never find a problem not having this.

I had a Primary Arms 1-6x on a 308 I used to have, it was just under $500. That said, if I was to rebuy the scope I would have gotten a 1-6x Strike Eagle, they're usually between $550-$600. Definitely a step up.

I have several Primary Arms LPVOs that certainly function on their respective rifles. I have no need for more expensive LPVOs, if I were to upgrade them I'd be forced to spend $2k+ just to justify the switch (and it would likely not be an LPVO at all.)
