Hey all. This might fit just as well in the hunting category ( so feel free to move it mods). I am planning on hunting whitetails next fall with a 45-70 ( I know its overkill). I was just wondering what make of factory ammo I should look at. thoughts?

Depends on the ranges you are looking at. Leverevolution ammo has better performance at longer range than FP's of the same calibre. I don't know what the 45-70 stuff is like but the 30-30 stuff increases the effective range from 150-200yds to around 300yds. Partly due to the better ballistic coefficient of the pointed bullet and partly because of the higher velocity due to the factory loading.

If you are under 100yds, any factory 45-70 should work. I've never shot my 45-70 past 100yds, even with pointed bullets, so I have no experience with that. Personally for white tail at under 100yds I'd handload some ammo at even lower than normal velocity to prevent too much damage to the meat. Loads that simulate the old black powder ones in terms of velocity should be perfect for white tail; big bullet, low velocity.
