RECOMMENDATIONS: Shotgun Ammo for HD??

What are you fellows recommending?

I did a bit of reading a couple years ago about what shotshells are best for home defence. Both practical tests and theoretical calculations showed that #4 buckshot at a moderate velocity is the best. It shouldn't come as a surprise since a lot of shotshells sold as "home defence" ammo is #4 buck like that Remington HD.

The requirement in the tests I was reading about was lethal penetration through moderate amounts of clothing at "across the room" distances. Being able to punch through car doors, 2' of ballistic gel, or other things like that where considered overkill and actually negative for home defence situations.

I would want to do a lot more tests to verify but wax slugs have a lot of potential for home defence. They practically explode when they hit anything more solid than air because the wax is so weak relative to the energy the projectile has. Even being fired through a mock wall in some tests they broke up so there was essentially just birdshot coming out the other side. No one to my knowledge has done good highspeed video of wax slugs hitting ballistic gel or anything of the like. I really want BrassFetcher on youtube to do a video on it. He did do a video on cut shells and they caused massive trauma to a depth of 6-8" I believe but very little penetration past that.

If it's for HD, what about rubber shot?

The chance of being sued is always there.

If a burglar breaking into your home slips, falls, hurts himself, and successfully sues you for having an "unsafe home" imagine the case against you if you intentionally hit him with a rubber slug and breaks his ribs and collapse a lung.

Everyone and their mothers says it and I've had a police officer tell me the same thing. Do everything you can to avoid a situation where taking a life is required but if you find yourself in said situation, don't shoot to wound.

According to Dr. Gary K Roberts, any buckshot sized #1 or larger will work. Birdshot is for birds.

My Baikal MP153 3" magnum 12 will put steel BBB pellets @ 1550 fps through 1/2" plywood at 45 yards. Not all get through but most do. Add some drywall and it may not get through. Then again HD scenarios usually are 15 ft or less.......

Shoot a water melon at 10' 20' 30' with trap load. Would you want to be that watermelon? Sure you might not kill him across the parking lot but inside a room you will ruin his day. Trap loads at close range are devastating and lethal. Guaranteed to take the fight outta any intruder and let any of his buddies know you aint to be f*cked with

Thanx.

Have never looked at anything 20 ga except target ammo.

Check out the guys with the old shotshells at the next gunshow you go to. I picked up a bunch of Imperial AAA buck a while back. AAA is the English equivalent to No. 4 buck.

P&D has the cans of 175 rounds of Federal 00 buck right now for $108. Really hard to go wrong at that price point and it will do the job.

Don't go telling everyone! My supply of AAA will start drying up..... :p

Don't forget that in the home defense case you are in fear for your life or the lives of your family members. You will be not just shooting a perp once. More than likely you will be emptying the mag on the SOB. If he's still moving he is a threat and needs to be stopped... :D
