Hi everyone,

New to the hunting scene, so would like to ask for some suggestions.

Am interested in doing a full guided tour to hunt big games (no preference).

Price is not that much of an issue, but would like to have the following.

100% fair chase hunt only
Great comfortable accomendations
Full Guide, as i know nothing
Gun rental (convenience)
located in Ontario
last but not least... Excellent service.

Hey there -

I know you asked for input on outfitters in Ontario - but I thought I'd throw a moose outfitter from NFLD in. Newfound Outfitting (see their website). Ray and Cindy are terrific, food is great. One guide per person and there are tons of moose.

I've been there twice - the first time I only had 2 days to hunt and I still took a moose and saw 12 or 15 others. Second time shot a nice cow. You can fly direct to Deer Lake and they pick you up.

Really a great outfitter to consider if you decide to look outside Ontario.

I'll be interested to hear what others suggest in Ontario.

Cheers -

I should have mentioned that the first time I hunted with them was the first time I had ever hunted moose. My guide was a tremendous help and was patient with all my undoubtedly stupid questions.

If you're looking to pay to hunt, really should go west. Bigger and better hunting, and more beautiful scenery. As a first hunt, calling a northern Alberta/BC or Yukon bull moose in would be a pretty exciting and incredible start. A guided horseback Rocky Mountain Elk hunt a hell of a way to begin too. Just depends how deep the pockets are, budget would be good info for us. A lot of western hunts can go to $10k or more.

If you're just out to try hunting, easily accomplished on your own really. That said, it's certainly not a bad introduction going with an outfitter if you're getting your hands dirty too.

Don heuston at horseshoe island camp in matachewan ontario. Does moose and bear. Great lake. Water access only. Propane cabins that are nice. Awesome fishing aswell

If you are new to hunting the worst thing you can do is get plunked in the woods with a strange rifle and some one to do the work for you.

That being said I would look for something in South western Ontario. You can sit in a heated stand and have your choice of big deer.

quoted for truth. If as you say " money is no option" Get in touch with Stone Mountain, Big Nine or any of the other Outfitters operating in the Northern Rockies.
No offense or disrespect for the other outfitters in Canada but there is only one place where an Outfitter can offer you Goat, Sheep, Caribou, Whitetail deer, Mule Deer, Elk, Grizzly, Black Bear, moose, Wolf, Ducks, Geese, Upland Birds all out of the same lodge. If you got money why hunt with the retired plumbers when you can hunt with the Plastic Surgeons? (BTW I make wayyyyyy less a year then a plumber and could not afford a guided hunt to save my life LOL)
If you are new to hunting and want a positive experience then you are gonna need to talk to a lot of outfitters (and thier refrences) and decide based on thier understanding of what you want/expect. Not everyone can offer what everyone else wants.
BTW now is an excellent time to be shopping for a trophy hunt with cdn dollars. just be honest with them about your abilities and experience so they can plan something that is a success.

First of all... I have to say... the people on this site never disappoint.

My budget is about 15K, but no need to go out on purpose just to spend it.

I don't mind flying out of Ontario, but dont want to fly to like BC or the west side for my first hunt... baby steps.

The reason I want to go to an outfitter, is because I have to use one as a non-resident, but also need someone to show me the ropes.

Keep the advise and suggestions coming !!!!

Good advice from Doyle, I like that Liketoknow is frank about his experience level and what he's expecting. It would be very easy to get a deer or Black Bear on your own and figure out field dressing and skinning in the case of the bear, so I'd definitely be looking for something that's more work if you're going to hire an outfitter. Moose would be a good call as that's not a fun hunt (well it is, until you shoot one) alone or without gear/boat/ATV etc. Get your money's worth from the outfitter and take advantage of his machines and setup that way. A deer is a simple one guy hunt, I'd pick something bigger.

Well you're going to have a great hunt at your budget. I've hunted Africa twice, including dangerous game, for under $15,000 a pop.

I wouldn't rule out the west so fast, the outfitters are better (world class, lots of Euro hunters come over etc) and as Doyle mentions one of the world's best selections of game and big animals. Your money will bring you a better experience out here, even just for the scenery. Plus, shooting a moose is shooting a moose... If he's bigger and in a prettier place- all the better it's the same shot. :)

$15K is a great budget for anytime but sheep or grizzly, really. Probably good idea to avoid BC. You would be spoiled for the rest of your life!:)

Although northern BC offers incredible experiences, there are lots of "meat and potato"outfitters in BC, too.

Not wanting to fly to B.C for your first hunt is like not wanting to sleep with a pretty girl your first time, LOL.

Hunting is like anything location, location, location.

Just saying if you got the cake to play gentlemen hunter go for it. Quads in the mud and flat lands for moose is alot different then Caribou above the tree line on horse back and a 5 star chef waiting at the float plane dock to cook the tenderloins.

I am just jealous cause if I had 15 k for a hunt I know exactly how I'd spend it LOL
