Recommended precision bases and rings?

Hello all,

I've been using Leopold bases (with the windage adjustment) and rings on my rifles for about a year now, having gone with the recommendation of a gunsmith because I didn't know any better when it comes to that often overlooked piece of your shooting system.

When I see other more experienced precision rifle shooters describing their setups, it seems to me that there are a variety of rings and bases used. My question is fairly simple:

Are Leupold bases and rings considered high enough quality to be used on a precision rifle system, and what other brands are also similar in performance and quality?

What kind of leupold rings and bases are you using specifically, they have a large range. Their Mark 4 rings are considered quite good.

Right now for rings i'm using Farrels and they are awesome, but there is a huge selection of high end ones out there, Farrel, Near, Nightforce, Badger, etc, etc.
 
Having reviewed the offerings on the Leupold website, I believe mine are the Standard (STD) Mounts, two piece bases with windage adjustment and the accompanying rings.
 
^^^ i think redlich is talking about the leupold 2 peice basses and mounts,

the way i see it is.. the 2 peice style with build in windage are decent but in my eyes its just another screw to come loose and change your POI, geoing with the picitany rail and ring mounts, you can take the scope off with the rings on it, do what u need to do and remount the scope and be withing 1 or 2 MOA of being sighted in, very high quality stuff will bee perfectly set when remounted..

i personally prefer to run a rail - near manufacturing, night force, farrel and a good set of rings

if youv got spare coin, take a look at the near manufacturing alpha mount... but thats a fair bit of spare coin if your not very serious about precission shooting

Yea I think you'd be hard pressed to find a precision shooter that wouldn't advocate a one piece picatinny rail. And like Mr. Monkey said, you can spring for an alpha mount from near or another similar one piece ring/rail combo, thats getting pretty badass at that point.

Precision rifles turn into money pits pretty quick! :D
 
No I'm not very serious yet, focusing more on other shooting disciplines for the time being... but that being said, I prefer not to use sub standard equipment when I can help it... especially when it comes to something important like mounts!

It sounds like an upgrade may be in order sometime in the next year, but it's not *right now* critical. So far it sounds like the top offerings are Near, Nightforce, Farrel, and Badger. Are there any others that should be considered? I'll be checking pricing right after this post.
 
added note - with the alpha mount you will need a rail (0 or added MOA) and can also have MOA built into the mount when ordered from Near. but with the 1 piece alpha mount he garuntees that the rings dont need to be lapped for a precission fit

if your not that serious yet, you can drop away from the big names in the game and save some coin while still upgradding, like a Weaver rail and a set of lepold "tactical" rings, will set you back about 100 bucks and be a decent quality, its what i have been running on my 308 for about 3 months, it hasnt moved or any thing, and i can take the scope off and on while my POI changes about 1" at just under 300yds
 
Ok thanks Monkey, that's the kind of information I was hoping to get. By Leopold tactical rings are you referring to the Mark 4's?

Ya sorry the mark 4s or the PRW if you prefer. the PRWs are a bit cheapers but still do the job, its what im running for the time being

you never did mention what rifle your useing? some manufactures dont nessisarily make basses for all makes/ modles of rifles
 
Well, my "precision" rifle at the moment isn't really a tactical style precision rifle at all. I'm using a mark V accumark in 300 win mag with an elite 6500 4.5-30x50 scope and the aforementioned bases and rings. This is my way of playing with mid range shooting and using the same setup for stand hunting for the larger ungulates also. What I'm hoping to do once I find the money (may take a while...) is to throw a lighter 40mm scope in the 4-12 or 4-16 range on the weatherby and use it more solely for hunting, something like a sightron SII, and then put the 6500 on a new 308. I'm very intrigued by what mystic precision is doing with upgrading the stevens 200's bit by bit and I'm very tempted to go that route, upgrading components a bit at a time as I go.

As you can tell it's a work in progress but I needed more education on quality mounts to link all these pieces together!
 
hmm you may have a hard time finding 1pc mounts for a mark V.. im not to sure what sort of bolt spaceing they use, so deffinatly check into that befor you start buying / ordering basses.

if your planing on doing a precission project in the near future, it might be an idea to hold off on upgrading your current rifle if u plan to make it hunting only. and start to peice together a target rifle. or you may end up with rings / basses that you have no use for..

if what you have now is working id just stick with it untill u know what you want to buy/build and put your money into that..
 
I'd love to be able to continue using what I have now all the time, but unfortunately the range I use for 6 months of the year has caliber restrictions that rule out the 300 :(

For that reason I'm figuring that it'd make more sense to pursue the TR route of shooting that specifies calibres, hence the 308. If I do go ahead with that plan, I'll be looking to upgrade the rings and bases for the new rifle and probably keep the old ones on the mk V, just switching the scope from the Mk V to the new one. If I did upgrade the old bases it'd be because I had spare cash lying around.
