Fellas I can't remember if I read it here or somewhere else, that the short ARs are "hard on their internals". Mind you... A lot of guys are the run-n-gun types that think nothing of dumping 1000 rounds in a weekend, and a lot of those are Yanks that will do that 30 rounds at a gulp with the big high cap mags. I probably do about 3000 rounds a year...should I expect problems?

What kind of service life are you boys getting out of your shorties? Do you have any preference for brands on your back up parts and pieces? I had a brain fart of biblical proportions a couple weeks back and bought an AR with a 7.5" barrel on impulse ... and yannow ... That damned thing is more fun than a barrel of monkeys. It shoots like a hot damn too! My chit house reloads (mixed brass & primers) are coming in at 1" at 50 yards with a Cheapo Vortex 3X optic off the sand bags at the bench...!!! HFS!

I almost want to sling up and go prone at 200 and 300 just to see what it can do...

Right off the top, I have to correct you, those are not "High Capacity" magazines, those are standard capacity magazines, we have stunted or reduced capacity magazines. Okay, with that out of the way...

I used to own a DD Mk18 Mod1 that I recently sold to a fellow gun nut. When I was running that rifle I put about 4,000rds through it a year, and not .223 either. I was running 5.56NATO M855 and Hornady 75gr. OTM. She ran like the devil's timex for me and I never had an issue with her. The last time I stripped her and cleaned her up for transport I saw no deficiencies, no unusual wear and no damage to the thing in any way. I've heard reports that the DD Mk18 uppers that have been put on Form III lower have a barrel life of somewhere around 30,000rds if you use automatic fire correctly. I have heard that there are DD Mk18 pipes that have 40K down the pipe and are just starting to show noticeable loss of accuracy.

As for accuracy out of a 10.3"bbl (Sorry, I've never run a PDW), I can't get anymore technical than I could bang a 300m "Minute of Torso" gong from prone all day and have made solid hits out to 400m+. From standing and low ready I could throw controlled pairs into an area the size of a dessert plate at 50m in less than 2 seconds with the DD Mk18, so the shorties are plenty accurate if they are made right and you do your job.

The biggest thing is to get quality parts and a quality build, whether you do it yourself or you buy it from a reputable manufacturer. After that, there are plenty of quality instructors who can show you how to make the SBR dance for you.

I would keep a spare bolt kicking around.

Spend a couple of bucks on a 1/2 litre tub of bearing grease (yes, the stuff for cars) a litre of non-synthetic 10w30 (the cheaper the better) a couple of spray cans of brake clean.....

Spend the rest of your $$$ on ammo!

somewhere there's a gunny who is looking at his "like new dd mk18 with extremely low round count" and thinking WTF!!!

lol

Ha, thankfully not. I bought his gun, and knew the round count. I'll attest to it looking in very good shape. It still runs like "the devils timex".

Long story short, if you bought a decent shorty, I don't think you will see any appreciable difference in lifespan.

I always bring a 2nd AR to the Range...

But In my Grip I have a Bolt, Firing Pin, Cam Pin, a bunch of springs and all the other small parts. And make sure the Bolt you have in the grip has a couple hundred rounds thru it ( So you know it works )...
