I'm shopping for the most effective recoil absorbing stock for my Mossberg 590.
My right shoulder was injured in a biking accident a few years ago, and the kick of this gun with its OEM recoil pad is making it worse. I removed the stock pad and replaced it with a Limbsaver, but really--the original stock's 14-1/2" pull is at least an inch too long for me.

I'd like to hear from anyone with direct experience with one of the newer (i.e. currently available) recoil absorbing buttstocks that might allow me to continue shooting my fabulous 12ga.

thx
CW

I've got an ACE SOCOM stock on my 590A1. Originally it came with a crap LE stock and I replaced it with a Mesa Tactical adaptor and the ACE stock. It took what was a wallop and make it a nudge.

They offer two lengths of tube with about 2" of adjustability each.

If your buttstock has a hole in it for the screw that holds the stock on fill it with lead shot. I cuts the recoil a lot. AlSo drilled moer hole and filled them all. Tamed her down a lot. YMMV

I know it's a bit of a long shot, but if you're willing to adapt it to an AR style stock.. MDT makes an amazing recoil pad for magpul furniture. My experience was on my .50bmg - and it made it a pleasure to shoot.

That's a light heavyweight!

Hey, Mach!

Choate, eh? I must take another look at what they're making nowadays.

And BTW--That's a fine looking shorty-shotty!
What is that, a 590A1??

I suppose that's one way to make it lighter: Chop some length off the heavy barrel!

It's more than a pad.

I have a phoenix kick lite on my 870 and love it. Works very well, looks good and doesn't pinch like the competitors

The Kicklite is an interesting design, one of the few that don't rely on padding exclusively.
A few years ago I got smacked by a truck while riding my bike and my right shoulder was badly injured.
I'm presently using a "Limbsaver" buttpad, but IDK whether I might need more than just padding....

I use one a Magpul CTR stock and the limbsaver pad for the magpul CTR , it works very nicely , you might also consider going to a reduced recoil load shootshell .
I've also cut down all my Mossberg stocks by about 1.5" and add limbsavers to them , all you need is a hacksaw and a table top grinder .

Thanks, but...

Thanks for those ideas, Greenhouse.
Unfortunately, it's just not practical to cut down my existing Mossy stock since it's equipped with the speedfeed device that stows four shells in spring-loaded internal tubes. Also, the machine screws that hold the buttpad on thread into metal sleeves (ie they're 'bolts', not 'wood screws', so I'd be sawing into those threaded sleeves.

BTW-- I clicked on that link, but it seemed to be all about Glocks...?

Speedfeed stocks aren't that great, lots of CGN'rs have found these to be crappy... and the LOP is long on the factory installed stocks. Once I went to the Choate and got it to 13.5" LOP w/PG, everything felt better for me. It just 'fit' better. I tried a 12" LOP Hogue and couldn't get it off fast enough, felt so cramped.

You may find that no matter what you do, you may not find 12G recoil manageable with your injury... or become a lefty.

Here's the link for shorting the speedfeed stock , http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=298709 , just copy and paste to your browser , I'm unsure if we're allowed to hotlink to another forum .
Some good info , not to crazy about how the front was done with out the groved ring for the receiver , but looks like it'd work .

I can experiment with LoP...

Hmmm... I may just experiment with an adjustable stock like this new one from ATI:
http://www.cabelas.ca/product/78204/ati-t2-tactlite-adjustable-shotgun-stocks

There's a "cabalas" just up the hill from me here and they've got six of them on the shelf.
At the moment that's pretty much the choice to see anything up close. Once I determine
the correct LoP for me, I might settle on a fixed length one. Alternately an adjustable
stock would allow for different types of clothing, and different shooting circumstances.
I just never liked adjustable stocks that wiggled and rattled. That's why I replaced my AR's
adjustable with a rigid M-16.

CW, I know you like to balance the form & function of the accessories you install on your firearms,
So I've got to say, I find that ATI stock you have referenced above to be aesthetically displeasing! ;-)
Also, +1 on MoeBerg_590A1's suggestion regarding porting the barrel.

If you go the ATI route, or any adjustable stock, take a look into a side saddle for your extra shells.
I've got a Mesa Tactical 8-shell saddle on mine, which is ideal because my magazine holds 8...for you, maybe grab a 4-shell holder to replace the speed feed stock.

I'm pretty sure you can find those at Cabelas too.
