Getting back into bowhunting and am looking at getting a new recurve in the 50 -55 lbs. draw range. but I don't want to spend the money for a custom bow. the only thing I really want is one designed to be shot off the shelf.

Right now I'm leaning toward a martin hunter model or dreamcatcher. But I was also looking a the checkmate bows.

Does anyone have experience with these bows or other suggestions in the same price range?
 
How long has it been since you pulled a 55 pound recurve? It doesn't take long to lose the upper body muscle tone.
Any bow shops near you? Go get fitted and try the bows you're interested in, if the shop has 'em.
My only hunting bow is an old Martin Warthog. Compound. Good bow.

50 lbs is a good weight for a hunting bow. Go to tradgand or the leatherwall and learn all you want about trad gear. If you want to shoot off the shelf, which is a great idea by the way-the shelf has to have a a bump or sweet spot above the deepest part of the grip. Also make sure that where the shelf and riser meet isn't radiused it has to meet at a right angle or elso you'll have problems. I started with a pse impala and although it's an inexpensive bow I've shot 5 deer with it. I've moved on to high end longbows now, but I'd have no qualms about pulling out the old recurve to shoot deer,moose bears.

For the price of a Martin you can get a pretty nice Chek-Mate. IMO the CM is a nicer shooting bow, especially of the shelf. And they're Canadian made. :)

I'm right handed.

I was looking at the chek-mate bows web site. anyone have a dollars price.

I also found the site for canada millenium bows, also canadian made,anyone have any experience with these?
 
Chek-mate makes some really nice bows. 50-55lbs is a nice weight. I shoot a crusader at 51lbs in a 64'' bow. The Kings pawn deluxe is one of the nicer recurves unless you want to go to a take-down hunter 2. Super nice bows for the money if you want pm me and I will be glad to help
