As a locksmith, I come accross UNGODLY amounts of brass. Everything is made of brass. Lock cylinders, keys (some are nickel plated, but underneath is brass) and even the pins/wafer tumblers. When I drill something, I sweep up the brass. When I cut keys, the brass falls into a tray for collection (I make money on the key AND the waste). When I rekey a lock, I keep the old tumblers. If I go to a big job where they have a bunch of keys that are unused, I ask to recycle them.
You wouldn't believe the pales of brass I bring to scrap yard in a year. The guys there love me. We usually work out a deal, they'll give me part of the load as "Uncleaned Brass - 1.60$/lb" and the rest as "Yellow Brass - 2.60$/lb". Its a really nice cash bonus every month...
I've never tried to sneak some fired brass in my pales, maybe next time.
Oh this is a small town, by the way. That could account for the price difference.
