Just stumbled upon a few things, and I'm not sure what the difference is.

-I understand that a shotgun need not be aimed LIKE a rifle, in the sense that you're not trying to hit a dime.
-I understand that a shotgun can and should be learned with using iron sights first (I'm going to pick up my 870 Tactical tonight! I will definately be shooting for months to come with the IS.)

So,

I understand that anything under 200 bucks in optics isn't worth buying - then I stumble upon some 'cloned' red dots.

I'm seeing EOTech rip offs for 80 bucks, a bunch of aimpoints for 70 bucks and so on.

My question is, I know these CAN go on a gun... they have the mount - it WILL fit.

How do they perform?

Why shouldn't they be put on a shotty?

Thanks for the hand-holding.

I have an Aimpoint clone on my DA shotty...no problems at all. Obviously battery life isn't the same but I don't mind. I refused to put a $550 red dot on a $300 shotgun and I have no regrets about it.

Problems I've encountered with red dots on shotguns are that if they aren't able to handle the "shock" of the rounds, they tend to stop working. Not in 5 or 10 maybe, but once you run 100 though the gun then they can get wonky.

I ended up buying a Bushnell T dot for one of my shotguns. About $140 I think it was. It was designed to handle the shock of the shotgun. Works just ducky.

Apparently the local police also use them on their shotguns.

Look at Vortex red dot's.
They've got a new one (Sparc) that just came out that is a bit smaller then the Stikefire and is a bit more money ( about $200 US retail)
Both have lifetime transferable warranties.

I own a fake ACOG site that I use on my rimfire rifles, but I would not hesitate to use it on a bigger gun save for it does not hold zero as well.

It really depends what brand/ manufacturer you get, but overall it will be less durable.

As long as you are not putting 3 1/2" slugs through said gun, it should hold up.

If it does not, no big loss at $60 bucks.

Have you tried it?

I put an $80 Tasco red dot on mine, and it lasted about 20 rounds before the red dot stopped working... :D

Not sure a clone would even have that many rounds in it.. LOL

Nope, have not tried it, but I got it for practically nothing at a boxing day sale, so I would not really care.

I have a BSA PMRS on an 18.5" Mav 88. The first one I bought broke at the range on day one. Had it replaced with another and it has now felt a few hundred recoils, approx 150 slugs in there. works great, still holds zero. was $90 at Bass Pro
