Found a few recipes for 7.0gr Red Dot with 250gr jacketed bullets: will be fired in two guns chambered in .454Casul.
What drives my interest is that I have an 8lb jug of it so.... given the scarcity of other powders may as well put this to use.

Anyone have any experience with similar loads using Red Dot & jacketed bullets in .45LC?

I use Promo, it's a Red Dot analogue made by Alliant mostly for commercial users but occasionally put out for the rest of us. It works great in all sorts of cartridges, I have used it With Campro 250grn bullets in .45C, also for .454 firearms. It was reasonably clean with good accuracy.

I ran into an old British fellow in Calgary at proline last year and got into a nice discussion about reloading.
he told me to use 6.0gr red dot in the 45 colt with the 250 gr jacketed bullets and that's what I've been using
I think the red dot works better then my previous load of unique that i was using.

What kind of load were you running?

250 Campro FCP
8grns Promo
1.575" OAL (top of the "cannelure" on the bullet)
Federal LP Match Primer
Starline Brass

I made a few hundred and they were a lot of fun out of my Toklat. A nice break for my hands and arms from slinging the same bullet at 1350fps. I don't often load .45C light but I am doing it more often lately.

What kind of velocities are you getting with this load? I don't mind loading them hot lol

In actuality I have Promo powder as well but given it's loaded (by grain) at the same levels as Red Dot I referred to it as Red Dot (Promo doesn't seem to be quite as popular as Red Dot and google searches for Promo yielded replies that were few and far between for this application).

From Steve's reloading page...

For .45 Colt

240 to 250 Grain Bullets

Red Dot From 6.1 grains to 8.6 grains

CCI-300 Primer

I saw this as well : unfortunately little detail is given on the style of projectile ( lead, hard cast or jacketed). Given the vast majority of loadings I found on the net reference lead/hard cast I was looking for confirmed details regarding jacketed bullets.

I didn't bother chronographing those as I didn't figure I'd really use the load much. My typical hot .45C is the same Campro bullet on top of 27.5grns of H110. My next batch will be a powder coated LEE 255grn cast bullet with a nice wide meplat. Due to powder being a bit harder to come by I have renewed interest in stretching things out so I will likely load with the five or so pounds of Promo I have left. The velocity of the load I posted should be around 1000-1100fps from a 6" if I were to guess.

Like you, I am trying to save on components so my H110 will be kept for my magnum cals. Promo will be used for this load and some shotgun.
Thanks for your help.

I did something similar to what you’re trying to do with the .45LC round and bullet. I wanted to load down for my Uberti 1873 lever for range plinking. And since the Uberti is a collector, I wanted something mild as well. So I choose TiteGroup. Because I have lots of it and it seems that it is fairly plentiful.

I use the Campro 250gr RNFP/FCP bullet. My load with the TiteGroup started at 6.0gr with LP magnum primers, but that wasn’t hitting steel at 100m very hard. So I upped it to 6.2gr. That was the sweet spot. It is very accurate, isn’t hard on the rifle or me, and hits the steel at 100m decently. Sorry, I also have not chrony’d this load.

Thanks for you help. I'll be working up some loads in the next couple of weeks. I'll be sure to chrony them and post results / load info.

PROMO is a terrific all-around fast burning powder. Suitable for most handgun applications. I was dropping 5.0 grains in a 44Special case with a cast & powder coated 200grain RNFT LEE bullet. Six grains with the same bullet in 44mag case.
I would be reluctant/hesitant to go to 8 grains & beyond even in a 44 mag case let alone a 45Colt case.
