Is a red dot scope on a 308 suitable for ranges of up to 100 yards?? What can I expect from a red dot at that range? Keep in mind that this is for a shooter that doesn't want a regular scope and can't use iron sights.
If so.... any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thx

A red dot should be absolutely fine; Europeans have been using Aimpoints on hunting guns for decades.

Yep, they work pretty good. One of the fellas at our camp used one on his model 100 and he shot more moose and deer than anyone at the camp. I don't care for them myself but lots of fellas really like them.

I'm pretty much a regular scope guy but I have a Burris fastfire 3 on one of my semiauto deer rifles and I trust it to 100 yds. Also have a Aimpoint PRO on my Tavor and 100yds is no problem for it as well.

I have older eyes and struggled with iron sights as well and these red dots fit the bill for me but some guys with astigmatism really have a problem with them.

I am also an older guy and shot many deer in thick bush with an Eotech on a 45/70 lever. Both eyes open and several were on the run. Also have an Aimpoint pro on a Browning lever that also works good.

I have never hunted with a Red Dot before but I just recently bought a Primary Arms MD-ADS red dot to play around with and I really like it. I think it would be fine to hunt with in the bush and out to a 100 yards or so. Looking forward to trying it out!

At close range ( < 100M) and typical hunting conditions red dot sights are superior to anything else. At longer range they can still serve pretty well.

Last fall at our elk camp i decided our old propane BBQ was in need of retirement. I placed it on a hill about 250 M away, and invited all camp members to shoot at it with my Marlin guide gun 45-70 with Burris fastfire sight. Offhand. It was hit about 3/4 of the time, and since the "vitals" of a BBQ are about the same as a moose, I figure the results were pretty good for casual marksmanship.

Red dots are like franks red hot. I put that $/-& on everything.

Could be my aging eyesight but using scopes/irons I've had to pass on a few early morning low light shots. Red dots really shine in that critical 5 minute first light period.

Brilliant idea. I watched a fellow shoot sub MOA groups at 100 yards at the local range with an aimpoint on a 223. For those of us who shoot right and are left eye dominant using a red dot is the perfect solution.
