Red dot on long range rifle

What could possibly be wrong in this picture?

Actually this is done all the time in 3 gun in the states on AR's. Down there they might shoot one target at 400 meters and have there next one at 20 meters. They use their scope on the long one, and tilt the rifle to use the red dot on the close one. And yes, it's on the opposite side of their face. Right side for right handed

If you want to do it, go ahead. If it makes you feel more secure for any reason go ahead. But on this forum you have to know that there will be a lot of mall-ninja, and smart-aleck replies, including mine.

That's really interesting, and does make sense. I'm right handed, but very much left eye dominant, so maybe the 'logical' part for me was just my brain seeing a way to get my 'good' eye into the action!!!

Aimpoint T1 Micro off-set at the 1 o'clock position, works great with a slight rotation of the OBR to the left...

Is that your service rifle gadget? Cool set up!
I was thinking about getting MRO which about the same size as T1, but now I think I am going to go with RMR dual illuminated. It is more compact for me.

I'm in the process of this right now. I have a 6-25x50 mounted on a R700 SPS tactical right now that I am setting up for a combo hunt next fall. I'll be out for Moose, bear and wolf with shots anywhere from 15-20 yards to a possible 500+ shot. I need a setup that can do both with one rifle. I'll be hiking with this setup each day for 8 eight days and there is no way I'll be using quick release mounts and carrying a second optic separately. Rifle has no open sights so a co witness setup is not an option either. Now I just have to get the mounts in for the red dot and get it mounted up to test.. Next will be figure out to mount left or right of scope.

Wow, carrying this around in the bush.... Expensive, heavy, complicated, solution to a problem that doesn't exist. Also, no need of huge mag "precision" optic to make a 500M shot. Of course, any real hunter won't leave to truck or quad unless the rifle weighs at least 15lbs. Just need a tripod and wifi hotspot to go with a solar powered microwave and "success!"

I was considering a micro reflex for a bit but with all the wide zoom range scopes these days I had a hard time justifying it. Seems like a 1-7 or 1-8 etc would be more effective. Still may try a set of strike industries sidewinders though.

I just mounted a Sightron STAC 1-7 with center illuminated dot today. For a comp gun maybe an extra $500+ red dot might make sense, but I can't see it on a hunting rifle that gets carried all day.

Speak of the devil. I was wondering about this the other day now that coyote season is here (aka winter). Last year I was set up on a beaver pond with my optic at 4x (4-16 Power scope) when a coyote unexpectedly ran from my 3-9 o’clock about 15m in front of me. By the time I realize what happened and got my scope up I didn’t have time for a clean shot. I’m wondering it a red-dot off-set at 45’ on my rifle would have made that shot possible.

I have a Bushnell First Strike set up as my secondary optic on my Yote rifle. Scope is zeroed for 200 yards, Bushnell is zeroed for 40 yards.

I saw a show on WildTV in which the intrepid hunter was perched in a treestand overlooking a bear bait at maybe 25 yards. He was carrying one of those gigantic long-range precision-hunter rifles that are all the rage on that channel. When a little bitty bear showed up at the bait, he actually fiddled with the adjustments on his mega-scope for a bit before taking the shot...they were target turrets, of course, so he looked like an expert hunter...

Hey, I guess there is a market for this idea! :)
