red dot or scope??

I am very new to shooting, got myself Ruger 10/22 and looking to work on precision - starting from scratch. I don't think I will be shooting past 100yards for now. I do prefer red dot on my Ruger as its compact and light and I will be a lot in bush but I am not sure about it. Should I perhaps go with a scope like Nikon rimfire 150? What do you guys think?

If your going for precision then you need a scope imo if your trying for 100yrds get into silhouette and buy a variable that goes up to at least 12

I went from a 4-16 to a holosight and now I've got the Bushnell Ar 22 2-7 on it. I like the bushnell the most. I shoot steels at 100.

I took my red dot off and replaced it with a 3x9 scope. For hunting the red dot worked ok, but for target shooting the dot would hide the bullseye on the target.

Depends on what you gonna be doing really... My 10-22 setup started with a micro aimpoint. For shooting steel and fast target acquisition @ up to until 50yrds it was a blast. You can shoot further on bigger steel plates too with a red dot too. I then slapped my Votex 6x24 on it just for #### and giggles. I push it past 100yrds now.

If you gonna hunt, get a scope, shot placement is too important to rely on a 4moa dot.

for precision target shooting you gonna need a scope too, the red dot will hide most of it otherwise.

Red dots are nice for close fast shooting but show their weakness when shooting at small distant objects

If you're looking at trying precision shooting with a .22lr at 100m, a red dot is definitely not what you want.

Get a scope with some type of parallax adjustment down to 25 yards or less(AO or SF) You said precision and that means power, a variable maybe a 4x16 for the distance.

go with a busnell scope or a Nikon prostaff rimfire scope they are great

I put a Nikon 2-7 P-rimfire on my 10/22. Definitely good enough (for me) at 100 yards. Better at 50 yards for precision'ish paper punching.
I find a red dot no fun except for close in stuff.

I found the same thing and only use it on one pistol..

A friend and I were plinking yesterday at 50 meters... My 10/22 with Bushnell TRS-25 was fun, but it (I) struggled on the smaller targets. Buddy's 10/22 with Nikon 2-7 was crystal clear and made the smallest targets a snap! If you are going for targets at 25 meters and under, the red dot will be fine. At greater distances, stick with a scope.

I find magnified optics more difficult to keep steady at close range if shooting offhand.

weird, if it's not steady in the scope picture, why would the rifle be steady with a red dot on... if it's moving, it's moving... no ?
