I'm looking to put a red dot on my 870 tactical but don't know which way to go. something that isn't to pricey under $250 and will take the pounding of 3" shells. any ideas out there?

Yep get a used Aimpoint. There are some pretty good deals out there if you're lucky.

The problem with red-dots, is the cheap-o guys are never really going to last through a lot of recoil.

You could probably get a Tasco/bushnell tubed red-dot sight (not the ones with the integral mount) and they MAY last fairly long, but I cant say from experience. I do know that the cheaper ones with integral mounts will shake apart rather quickly.

I may have gotten' lucky perhaps, but the $52.00 Tasco w/ integrated mount that I have has served well on my Norc 870... and while you shouldn't believe most (or even half) of what you read, the Tasco packaging rates the scope for use on shotguns running up to 3" shells...

I have been using a cheapy red dot on my 870 MM for over 2 years now with no problems.Probably 600 rnds of slugs and buck shot threw it.

have you considered the Burris Speedbead?

^there is usually not so big a gap, but this guy also installed a sling adapter between the stock/receiver.

I have the burris fast fire. Same device as a speed bead, but it is mounted on a normal pic rail attached to the receiver. Works great.

My tasco BKRD42 pretty much shook itself apart. I know that there are the 30mm ones, but the 42 never seemed to be very solid.

Interesting info though, I always kind of just assumed they were for .22's and stuff.

Just spend the money on quality. I had a BSA reddot on my mossberg, but It broke on me last weekend. I only have about 250 rounds through the tube. $150 to waste, should have bought something better...

Now I'm looking into ghost rings or aimpoint.

Dominion Arms Grizzly 12.5", AR15-870 MK III, EOTech 552.A65

Was out hunting this weekend with it (no, it's not fudd-proofed, but 12 GA is 12 GA), and managed to bag a spruce grouse and a couple crows (latter not for consumption). Had SUCH a blast with it.

Long story short, go with an EOTech. It's just blown me away with its quality. Also, didn't have any problem hitting the crows on the wing with the EOTech. Found it easier than with my 870 20GA with normal bead.

I have an Aimpoint M3 (love it), but it is a little high. For a simple setup, I would get the Burris speed bead because it is much lower to match the plane of the barrel.
