Red dot sight on my SKS

I put a leupold red dot sight on my '52 Tula SKS by replacing the stock rear sight with a scoutscopes rear sight. The weaver rail is removable and there is a rear iron sight notch underneath it in case you want to use your iron sights. The scoutscopes sight is attached to the reciever using existing mounting holes. I like this setup because there are no permanent modifications to the rifle and it's rock solid and holds zero just fine. The leupold scope is very very nice although not cheap and I heard Burris fast fire is almost as good for half the price. This red dot is great for fast target aquisition.

I used this setup for whitetail hunting last year and got a nice young buck with one shot. I know, I know not the greatest caliber for deer but it's where you place your shot what matters.

Nice setup!

I just put a TRS25 on the same mount on top of my SKS. Fairly happy with accuracy, and the mount seems really solid after a few hundred rounds. I've not removed and replaced the rail and tested for accuracy yet, have you had your off? Does it return to the same zero?

I vaguely recall something about tightening the same side consistently to keep it zeroed....

That's a fine unit indeed. I like the low profile of everything. It's not obtrusive by any stretch of the imagination.

I assume you are using modern commercial ammo and/or handloads, at least for deer anyway. What specifically are you using and how well do you find it groups? I've been toying with the concept of using my SKS for deer this year, and to learn what others are using with success never hurts.

Edit: Where did you pick up the mount and about how much did it run you, if of course you don't mind me asking.

Very nice setup and it obviously works very well for you, congrats. I was a little worried when I clicked on the thread Id be seeing another tacticool sks with a NCstar red dot but that Leopold looks great on there and is definetly well a built unit.

Thanks for the positive feedback guys!

I got the mount from scoutscopes.com I had to wait a few weeks for my order. Apparently they are selling quite a few of these for SKS and AK's. It was around $60.

I use Sellier & Bellot Soft Point rounds for hunting (Canadian Tire $17 for box of 20). Great round very consistent and they come with nice brass which is reloadable. I have also tried Hornandy Soft Point with red plastic tip (Canadian Tire $44 for box of 50) but I wasn't overly impressed with the Hornandy.

I haven't taken the scope off yet but intend on doing so sometime in the next couple of weeks. I'm fairly confident that it will hold zero since the base of the scope does not need to be removed only the top rail which has two screws holding it in place in addition to two dowel pins which fit tightly in the base underneath it.

I'll update with range results after remounting it.

I have the Scout Scope also and it is worth the $$$. The base goes on and stays solid. The weaver mount comes off and goes back on and keeps zero. Put a cheap green dot/laser on it and so far has not let me down.

Nice set up! Do you happen to remember the model numbers of the pieces or the web page you got this set up? I would like exactly this. A couple questions tho. I'm 6'4 and usually needed a higher then normal mounting bracket (like on my Ruger SR .22) so is this high enough and keep out of the way of your front sights? Also, have you put any other attachments on your SKS? My order is currently in my mail and will have to clean and put a couple boxes of rounds through it but I like to go balls deep into attachments to make it truly mine. Any suggestions after getting the feel for it? One more thing. What is the max magazine capacity you can acquire? I thought I saw a 30 round clip but that may have been a 20. Thanks for the help!!

Well done (both the scoping and the hunting). A red dot makes a lot of sense to me on an SKS (it is a "short range" gun after all), and it looks good - doesn't ruin the look of the gun at all.

threads like this make me wish I could use red dots... phuck my eyes piss me off...

I hope you don't mind me asking, what's wrong with your eyes that make a red dot not work for you? I've never used one and I don't have the best of eyesight, I would like to know in advance if this isn't an option for me... :(

I got a scoutscope mount from marstar, but i don't think they have any in stock any more.
I haven't put mine on yet, it's a project for over the winter. Do any of you guys who are using the mount find it's up quite high and have to lift your head off the stock to see? I have a shotgun reddot i tried on my 10/22 and it was so high i wasn't even touching the stock with my cheek, so i feel like i would need a cheek riser once i get it on the sks.
