Red Dots for Predator Hunting?

Hi folks,

Does anyone here use a red dot scope for predator hunting? I like the idea of faster target acquisition, specifically for predators since the buggers rarely stand still for more than a second or two. However, I'm hesitant because I'm not sure how a red dot would perform at ranges up to 300 yards. Would I just need to put a magnifier on it?

I'm looking at building up a predator rifle, and want to use a Vortex Strikefire. Would this work, or am I better off sticking with a standard scope?

Thanks,

I'm going to try coyote hunting with an eotech in a few weeks. Will let you know... Have a 2.5x magnifier, but I don't think it'll be enough...

Most red dots are too big for long range shooting. The dot covers too much of the target. A magnifier won't help either.
A Vortex Strikefire has a 4 MOA dot. That covers 4" at 100 yards. It'll cover the 'bull' of a standard sighting in target entirely.

Eotech has a 1 moa dot in the middle. I'm looking forward to hearing how it works for predator hunting.

One of these might work too: :p

Well keep in mind the areas you plan on calling in. If you plan on calling in a heavilly wooded area and shots are to be close then a red dot willl be fine. If you will be callling in an area where shots can range out to 3-400 yards then a standard optic would be better.

Myself I have two .22-250's and one has a 2.5-10 on it and the other has a 3-12. I love the "dot" and have other scopes so suited. I am also looking at the vortex for another project. Vortex had a booth at huntfest in Saskatoon and when I talked to them they said I could buy a diamondback with a dot reticle. Think about your needs and decide from there.

Good luck.

Thanks very much for the info. I didn't realize that the red dot would cover that much of the target.

I'll do a little more research then and figure out some of my other options. The 2.5 - 10 that Riflesmith mentioned will be worth a look.

hpf1422, I look forward to hearing your results with the Eotech.

I just mounted a Vortex Crossfire on my RA XCR in .223... ten shots in and my crosshairs have gone from "+" to "X"... I was pumped about the optic... now not so much, it's getting sent back. But Vortex does have an amazing warranty, just the time it's away is time I could be out hunting with it :(

That's interesting Ironman6067. I'm sorry to hear that happened to you. I've heard nothing but good so far about Vortex optics. Do you think you got a lemon, and are you going to try other Vortex products in the future?

I currently run a Bushnell Elite 3200 on my 7mm. I've been very happy with it. If Vortex doesn't work out for you, it might be worth a try.

Thanks,

I'd say yes i just got a lemon. Contacted Vortex and they are sending me a replacement optic as well as a set of complimentary rings as i mention i would of like to buy a set when i bought the scope but the store didnt carry them. Needless to say i will be buying Vortex if only for thier cuustomer service!

I think that it would all depend on how close you usually call your predators. If you can get them inside 100 yards, then a red-dot would be fine. If you are shooting them at 50 yards, then the dot will only cover a mere 2" of animal which would still enable you to take a headshot if it presented itself. Past 100 yards, I would go with a magnified optic.
