Who here has a dot mounted on a shotgun?

I was thinking of getting one for hunting because im not too fond of bead sights, I asume an adjustable sight would make it a bit more accurate, are there any cons to adding a red dot on a shotgun?

You're confusing rifle and shotgun shooting. In shotgun shooting, ALL you attention should be on the leading edge of the target, and just a small part of the leading edge if possible. Sights are useful for turkey shooting and a few other such "shotgun" pursuits, but not for skilled wing shooting. Some good wingshooters will conceed the utility of double beads on a rib to ensure proper alignment for long crossing shots, but that's about it. Shotgunning theory for hunters was pretty much perfected about 100 years ago by the Brits. Sights on a shotgun do not change the fundamentals, they just encourage a shooter to "aim" instead of trusting to instinctive point and swing and muscle memory. If you are skeptical, look for successful competitive sporting clays shooters who use red dot sights. There aren't any, for a very good reason. Now if you just want to try something and find out for yourself, or if for some reason you have special needs, by all means go ahead, experimentation is part of what makes shooting so much fun.

I have one on my 18" slug gun. The best I could do with bead sights was 20" at 50m.
With the red-dot I can do 5".
No sights on the bird gun though.

i had a "thing" mounted on the barrel of my 1100 - you know it has 3 beads , 2 offset by about a half inch from the centre- theory was that you fired when your target lined up with the first offset and it supposedly gave you the correct lead to hit- fromeither side-
it DOESN'T work- i also had a SINGLEPOINT ( the dot was very large in those days- would cover the entire target at 100 yards, and i found out that the bead on the shotgun was better than looking at an orange basketball in my field of view- in other words , again useless- for the same reason as they don't put a rear sight on a shotgun

I have a B-Square mount on my Win 1300/rifled deer barrel. I used Bushnell red dot for the last 5 years. It worked great. Changed it last year for a scope with illuminated reticle. A big improvement at longer ranges, but not good for dogging the bush.

a red dot scope on a shot gun is the very best thing you can do for turkey hunting .it will get you on target very fast .it will also get the most out of your shot gun pattern .it i9s the number one improvment you can do to your shot gun for turkey hunting DUTCH

I put a reddot on my shotgun a few years ago for turkey hunting & liked it so much I never took it off. I can leave both eyes open to shoot with it, & it works well for geese too. I just swing with the goose, put the reddot on it's head, & fire. Works a lot better than a bead for me. If you get one, make sure to carry a spare battery. There is nothing worst than getting setup in a shooting position & finding that the battery is dead . It happened to me while turkey hunting the first year, but never again.
