I'm looking at trying some Berger VLDs in my new .308. I have the Redding Comp die set and I see there is separate micrometer heads for standard and VLD bullets. A couple of places sell them but they are out of stock and don't know how long before they get them in again. Question is, will using the standard head eff up my rounds and I should wait for the VLD version? Or can I start loading with the standard head?

I believe it depends on your die, as far as I know the competition seating die seats deep in the ogive for a vld wereas the reg die may not and u have to change the seating plunger. I know my ol rcbs dies can be off by as much as 12 thou, so I have a comp seating die coming in the mail
Redding makes a VLD bullet seating micrometer that replaces the seating stem in THEIR seating die. I ordered one from Sinclair and it was to my door in 10 days. The new stem matches the VLD profile and should correct your issue with run out provided your brass is good.
so your saying a competition seating die is not designed for a vld? or just the reg seating die
