Greetings reloaders. Last night I broke the bottom ram pin on my early 1990's Redding Ultramag press. It has loaded many thousands of rounds and always been well lubed. The largest it has done was 460 Wby years ago.
To me, this is the only design flaw on an otherwise great press. The relieved section is done to allow primers to pass through the hollow ram and out the bottom. I have another old press that is strictly set up with a universal depriming die, so I do have the option of replacing this with a straight pin. Still for all the miles on this, it would be handy to have the option of using it for one pass resizing. For all I know, it might still pass primers with a straight pin, but it does get "constipated" even with the relieved pin.
Does anyone know where spare pins might be available north of the ITAR border? I suspect I will be on the phone to Redding Monday morning.
I am sure inquiring minds will want to armchair quarterback this, so here is the story. I was pushing the shoulder with a F/L sizing die on a batch of 6.5x55s.. The necks were swabbed inside with Imperial die wax and the outsides of the bodies were lightly waxed as usual.
Thanks to prairieguy for selling me a big orange Lyman press a while back. I never thought I might need a spare so soon.
