Redoing the stock

What kind of stock are you trying to refinish? It is hard to give any sort of answer, as what one person might call a stain is a finish, and the type of wood underneath will also play a factor, as well as what you prefer? As an example, many of the factory stock finishes, that claim to be 'oil' are actually varnish. Many are stained with a red stain, and when that is removed you have a walnut available. So, you can stain it red again, or go with walnut. Same situation with many other types of stocks.
 
Stain is generally not removable chemically. You usually have to sand it down to remove it. The reason is that stain is actually absorbed by the wood. It's not a coating, it's like dye for wood. Varnish and paint can be removed more easily because it's on the surface only.

To remove the stain from my SKS stock I sanded it off and then did a linseed oil finish. Looks great!
 
I had a Winchester Sporter Magnum in 7 rem mag once and I hated the finish. So I got inventive and took an old table knife and used the backside flat edge to scrape off the crap the company put on. I then took 400 grit sandpaper and went over it a few times, took my time and WOW ! ! you should have seen the figure that stock hadafter I gave it a good dose of DOUBLE BOILED LINSEED OIL. Since I did not like the rifle , I sold it and got way more than I would have if I did not do what I did. What ever you do, take your time and don't rush through it !
