Reduction in the length of Ontario moose seasons

It sounds as though the MNR has made up its mind to reduce the length of the moose seasons, along with other changes. Don't know whether this will apply to all WMU's or just selected ones. Have any of the posters here given any thought to what affect this will have on their hunts this fall? Will anyone cancel their trips or be able to adjust.

Personally our group may be affected. For years we have taken the second week of the season in the unit where we hunt. In our case the dates have been stipulated. If the MNR cuts off the first week we don't know if the outfitter will try to move our dates or whether we will retain what we have spoken for. Regardless it seems some groups are going to get screwed. Also may impact guys who have to speak early for their vacations and may not learn of the final changes until after the deadline passes for them to change their vacation dates.

As usual the MNR doesn't seem to have considered the implications of their proposals. In my opinion they should have postponed the implementation of changes until next year. We have a real problem in figuring out how they make their decisions.

For example last fall the WMU where we deer hunt had the number of antlerless tags cut substantially (we think but don't know since the ministry doesn't release the data for last year until the new regulations come out this spring.) Where we have always been able to draw antlerless tags no one got any in 2014. And yet two of us hunting on one small property saw a combined total of between 50 and 60 deer, all does and fawns. Trail cam photos only showed bucks moving nocturnally. I don't know if we were hunting a particularly hot property or if the ministry staff were all wet in their predictions of the number of deer present. Would love to hear every ones thoughts.

Government doesn't really care about the recreational plans of the average person. If you have put a deposit down with your outfitter and actually confirmed the dates you want I don't see how they could bump you but you may want to contact them to confirm.

As far as your deer property goes, one property isn't usually enough to project the population of an entire WMU.

We saw deer in many areas in addition to the one we were hunting. Had watched deer all summer and could see no reduction in populations as suggested by the MNR.

As far as the moose hunting goes all but one of our party are retirees so we can adapt to any changes that may come. Going to make for an interesting season.

For the northern zones I don't believe the start dates for 2015 will change ( they're starting that in 2016) , the calf hunt is what appears to be affected this year. It is going to be reduced to 2 weeks only in the middle of the season.
